C2Q vs i5 vs Phenom II

ok heres an upgrade path iv narrowed down to but can someone plz pick the best one for the price/performance

    1st - qx9650 (£177) + asus maximus formula x38 special edition(it has true crossfire a big plus)(£80)+(4gb ddr2 i already have) = £257 (however not upgradeable...so will have to last for abt 3years)

    2nd - i5 (best cpu in my list) (£144) + Asrock P55m pro (it would most likely have a faulty foxconn socket which is a big con in my view + s*** oc)(£67) + 4gb ddr3(£60) = £271

    3rd (but not least) - Ph II 955 (£120) + DFI LanParty DK790FXB (also crossfire) (£104) + 4gb ddr 3 (£60) = £284

I will overclock and i game (1680x1050 but might upgrade monitor down the road)....at the moment i have an hd5770 and i was thinking of crossfiring it down the road (if i upgrade my monitor)

This 790X motherboard would be a much better choice for the Phenom:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-...SATA-3Gb-s-ATX

Not only does it have the SB750 southbridge but it also has Crossfire at PCI-E 2.0 8X. The el-cheapo socket 1156 motherboards have poor overclocking options and even if Crossfire is present one slot will be at PCI-E 2.0 16X and the other at PCI-E 2.0 4X.

If you want to keep your existing RAM then there is this DDR2 790X motherboard too:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/GIGABYTE-GA-MA790X-UD3P

TBH,I would get a new motherboard for your Q6600 and perhaps even a new cooler. You should be able to get a few more mhz out of it hopefully.

well my q6600 goes to 3.4ghz or 3.6ghz (not 100% stable or cool) and id pair it up with a maxims formula se but i can trade my q6600 (before it loses any value) and get a qx9650 for £177

the thing is, is tht i want something i can play with and overclock without too much hassle and i have an after market cooler (sonic tower)

I would check this list out:

    http://www.frostytech.com/top5heatsinks.cfm

However if you are looking for very good value for money the Akasa Nero is very good:

    http://www.frostytech.com/articlevie...id=2354&page=5

I would try not to spend more than £100 to £110 on the motherboard and cooler TBH,unless you have designs on re-using the latter in your next build(if possible).

2011 should hopefully be an interesting year as Intel should have newer architecture processors out and so should AMD hopefully.

was just looking at tht 5 minutes ago but i think ill stick with my thermaltake sonic tower and lap it (forgot to mention i had it)

a better question is how does the i5 and qx9650 and pII 955 compare to each other, of course the i5 will beat the other 2 but wots the diffirence i looked at few review and they all come close to each other but i think the PII has the least performance out of the 3

Not IMO. Also, im sure the ASRock P55 Pro-m recieved a top review on Anandtech.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: C2Q vs i5 vs Phenom II

TBH,your Q6600 even at 3.2GHZ would be good enough. The moment you start upping the resolution and increasing the image quality settings most games tend to be GPU limited.

Also compare the Phenom II X4 955BE to a Q8400 which is the equivalent processor in the same price range and the Phenom II would be ahead.

Also if you have specced this RAM with the Core i5 is won't work:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166996

The Core i5 needs low voltage DDR3.

IMHO,a Phenom II or 45NM Core2 quad core is going to be a sideways upgrade from a Q6600. The Core i5 has decent performance but unlees you are really CPU limited in games or can get a good price for your old bits I see no point in upgrading.

If you are gaming then you won't tell a single difference between any of the CPUs that you mentioned.

Out of those though the Core i5 is fastest for everything else.

it did but it also received a nice juicy foxconn socket tht can fry with a blink of an eye and take ur cpu down with it (if too much voltage is applied ofcourse) however it has 775 holes for coolers

I would probably stick with the Q6600 TBH for the time being.

if i stick with q6600 then ill have to buy a new mobo for it cos my p5k is on its deathbed and my hd5770 is just abt ready to finish it off and i dont know if it worth spending more cash on dying tech

£80 for a motherboard is much cheaper than going for a full upgrade. You will be spending nearly £200 more if you went for a full system upgrade.
