    Motherboard dilemma

    Hello,

I've RMAed my motherboard (a Gigabyte MA790X-UD4), and the supplier doesn't have the model to replace it and offers me a MA790FX-DS5 instead. The DS5 is quite a bit older, has only an SB600 southbridge, as opposed to the SB750 in the UD4.

The SB600 as far as I can see doesn't have support for some RAID modes (isn't important), and 2 less USB slots (10 is enough). Otherwise the MoBos are identical. So, the bells and whistles are enough, but the alternatives are there as well.

So the bottom line is, what do you think: should I accept the offer or get my money back?
The alternative MoBo (if I take my money back) would be an Asus M4A78-E, with SB750 and 790GX chipsets. The main advantage of this Asus board (as far as I can see) is the 8+1 phase power, as opposed to 4+1 of both of the Gigabyte boards.

Thanks for your replies - the sooner I get advice, the sooner I have my normal PC back

    Re: Motherboard dilemma

I would take your money back. If an out of stock replacement doesnt have the same features as your original then you can argue and argue until they give you wht you want even if it means they have to give you a better model.

Or just take your money back and get the other board

    Re: Motherboard dilemma

Do not accept an older, less well featured, motherboard. They should be providing an equivalent or better motherboard as a replacement. This is particularly important if you are thinking about overclocking (and since you've gone for an enthusiast motherboard I assume it had at least crossed your mind) as the SB750 has ACC technology that helps tune the system and increase your overclocking potential.

Yeah, told the retailer "I'd like to get the Asus". Tomorrow I'll call them again, and if they don't agree, I'll have to pay them a visit with a civil law book in hand Thanks for advice, guys

Definately money back; there is a nice lanparty 790 on scan clearance which I would read up on if buying a board now.

TBH, I would only accept an equivalent 790X based motherboard with the SB750 southbridge or a 790FX based motherboard with the SB750 southbridge or money back. Anything less and they are taking you for a ride!

Yes, that will probably be the case: the Asus isn't available, but there's Gigabyte MA790X-UD3P, whose only differences are ALC888 codec instead of ALC889A (which was horrible anyway), but has 8+2 phase power instead of 4+1, which is better.
