Upgrade woes

I have currently:

Asus M3A78 Pro AM2+
800MHz 6400 4GB
GeForce 275GTX.

Thinking about upgrading to:
i7 920
X58 Motherboard
6GB Triple Channel
Price. ~£500.

Or

AMD 965 AM2+ £120.00
New Corsair H50 + £55.00
4GB 1066Ram (My Motherboard supports it).


Do you think the i7 will be THAT much better? Of course it will be, but is it worth the £300?

Depeds on you, how you'll use it, how often you upgrade etc

I haven't upgraded my processor for quite a while. I game alot, and I've been noticing some slow down etc dow and again, but nothing major.

I feel like my mobo, cpu, etc is pretty outdated, but it does run quite well.

I would not overclock a 125W TDP Phenom II X4 using the Asus M3A78 PRO,however the Phenom II X4 comes with a pretty decent stock cooler which has copper heatpipes.

IMHO,the OP should just replace their current CPU with a 125W C3 stepping Phenom II X4 965 and keep their existing RAM. I would save the rest of their budget until 2011 as AMD will be releasing Bulldozer and also Intel should have newer architecture CPUs also out by then.

A Phenom II or Core 2 quad core processor at 3GHZ is still good enough for gaming unless you are intending to use multiple HD5970 cards or something like that.
