Six full length PCI-E slots seems OTT though.

Re: First 890FX motherboard pictured!!
Nice, 890FX just a continuation for phenom II with view to new CPUs coming in 2010?
Re: First 890FX motherboard pictured!!
Well, How many 1x cards are there out there....
All the cards that are really useful on PCIe are mainly 8x or 16x. Sticking 1x and 4x slot is just wasting space on the motherboard. I think having 6 of those is just brilliant, even if it only have 4x each. power users can easily populate 6 slots (2x GPU, 2x RAID, 1x GbE, 1x Sound)
This will make a super hardcore NAS, beef it up with 4x RAID6 card and a quad GbE card and you get 600MB/s network throughput and 2.5GB/s disk speed/
Re: First 890FX motherboard pictured!!
"six PCI Express x16 slots" Looking at the picture of the PCI slots and the size of the high end graphics cards these days, I wonder how many can you really fit on that board!!
Re: First 890FX motherboard pictured!!
Has the NB been moved closer (next to) the CPU or does it disappear on the new 890 boards ?
Re: First 890FX motherboard pictured!!
i wonder how this would compete with the x58 because i currently u can get a good x58 board with sli and crossfire for £120 with postage

On a performance basis though the X58 is miles in front of anything AMD have, even the i5 750 is faster than the Phenom X4 965(?)

and u can get a good x58 setup for under £300 (cpu+ram+mobo)

Indeed :) AMD is the hands down winner though if your trying to stay cheap as possible though while retaining some decent performance IMO - This may all chnage with the Arrandale(?) and H55/57 set ups coming out in early 2010.

Scan and Ebuyer both list retail Core i7 920 processors at over £200 and of course you do realise that the Core i5 750 is a socket 1156 processor and the x58 is a socket 1366 chipset.
OTH,this article should be of interest to you too:

u cant easily find a 2nd hand i7 920 for £150 or even less on ebay and other places
believe me im a dedicated bargain hunter ;)
thanks for the article though
Re: First 890FX motherboard pictured!!
Scan were also fdoing some good i7 bundles on Today only recently. So much so I was tempted to go for an i7 based machine, but for surfing and MS office work I thought that was overkill.
And also I think the upgrade options for the 1366 socket are going to be limited

Echoed my thoughts beautifully.

Why?
You don't generally need 3 memory channels for quad core (as shown by the 1156 keeping up). Intel included that extra memory channel for future 6 & 8 core variants.

Do you think they are electically x16, or just physically?
Not that it matters much to me, my video card would be quite happy on X8. Just one PCI slot though, I would have to buy new freeview TV cards.
