I'm pretty much in the exact same position as you and have been looking at the above set myself, the biggest draw being real Dolby Digital which will help draw the goodness from your soundcard.
But @ £109 they could be expensive.
Re: Looking for a headset
i've also been checking those out too. one thing the review doesn't really delve much into is the use of it on a pc.... can't seem to work out for certain how it'll connect.... analogue or optical. if its via optical then that basically bypasses my soundcard.... but then again if i dont use optical that neat balck box will seem a bit redundant....
also forgot to mention would like it to connect to my laptop.....
i hate shopping for new gadgets, too many choices and not the perfect one knocking around :(
edit: price isn't too much of a concern, obviously a few hundred is out the question. but over a hundred is still ok
Re: Looking for a headset
Does you sound card not have optical out? I know what you mean on PC usage front, i've been trying to find some better pictures of the unit itself.
Re: Looking for a headset
yes it does have optical out, but by using it i won't actually be using the hardware of the card. it'll just be the same as using the optical out from my mobo. the black box the headphones plug into will decode the signals, which means the soundcard isn't actually doing any work....
Re: Looking for a headset
a good desk mic is worth considering.. then you don't need to buy "gaming" cans, but proper audio ones, then the sky is the limit :)
If not... and you wanna keep the price down, and not have over the ear jobs, Sennhieser do a good job with these

Sair (my missus) has them and they're good.
Re: Looking for a headset
Just found this on What Hifi. They received a good review and also has a mic, at £60 I think they look pretty good:

Re: Looking for a headset
Avoid headsets like a plague. A combination of audiophile cans + 2quid mid from dealextreme.com would do the job very nicely. When I saw your requirements the Denon AHD2000 instantly came to mind, but its more for audiophiles rather than people who fall for marketing gimmicks like "surround sound" or 7 channel headsets. If the price is too high for you, take a look at its younger brother D1001 also sold as creative aurvana live.
Re: Looking for a headset
Another vote of PC131, had a set for a couple of years, cracking value.
Re: Looking for a headset
thanks for the response guys. had a look at the Sennheisers but they don't meet all the points i stated above :(.
in regards to the non-gaming options, i'd rather plup my money for some gaming headphone if possible. i would the benefit of surround sound, unless someone can show me that non-gaming headphones are just as as good. my desktop would be able to emulate surround sound as i have an x-fi sound card, but my laptop doesn't.... as a separate mic isn't something i'm too fond of at the moment, but a removable mic is definitely something i'd like.
i'm very picky not doubt you'll see lol. thanks again
