    Dead Mobo?

    Hi Folks,

I'm so far out of the PC Building/Troubleshooting loop its unreal (I gave up, I'm only interested in it when I'm building a new machine!).

Anyway, I've got a buddies PC to fix, it doesn't turn on at all. I've chucked his CPU into my machine, and mine still turns on - but with my CPU in his, his still won't turn on. I'm trying to turn it on with Mobo/CPU/GPU/RAM only and I get nothing.

Nothing spins up or anything, I hear a click from the PSU (which I've used to boot another machine so it can power a PC), but after that I get nothing.

Safe to say that the Motherboard is goosed?

I should add that this friend had tried to move his PC into a Mac G5 case and since then it hasn't turned on, I'm leaning towards his having shorted it on something and killing the motherboard that way (he also said he picked up the Mobo by his HSF which won't have done it any good I don't think!

What does the Hexus.Hive-Mind make of that, replacement Mobo time?

    Cheers!

    Re: Dead Mobo?

I would check the RAM with Memtest and also check the graphics card too.

It does sound like the motherboard is kaput though.

    Re: Dead Mobo?

As the Moose said - its a process of elimination and look slike you've eliminated the PSU and CPU.
So if you eliminate the case as being the RAM or GPU then voila- its the mobo.

    Re: Dead Mobo?

Sounds like the mobo is dead, but as kmac says, it's best to swap out all possible components to be sure. Might be worth checking if there is anything that could be causing a short between the case and the motherboard.

    Re: Dead Mobo?

Yeah, my first thought was that there was a short 'cause he's using the Mobo Tray from his P182 in the G5 case, and its a rather hacked job.

I've been doing all my testing on a piece of cardboard though, to make sure that isn't the issue. I'll try with my GPU/RAM tomorrow and confirm for sure I guess!

IMHO faulty RAM, video card, CPU etc. would not stop the mobo from powering the CPU fan, mobo driven case fan(s) etc.

I would check the case front power switch is switching correctly, and look closely for dry solder joints or shorts around the 24-way main power, and possibly the 4-way 12V power, connectors on the mobo, including loooking on the reverse side of the mobo around those areas.
