Question Optical Drives - Drawer opening issues

I have two SATA optical drives.

One a Sony DVD ROM and one a Philips DVD-RAM.

BOTH fail to 'open' when pressing the button. The Philips one started playing up before the Sony but ultimately both have the same issue. After repeated, around 10 times of rapid pressing they do open.

Both are around 2 years old, is this the expected shelf life for todays 'budget' optical drives?

Is there a quick fix of is it just 'easier' to buy new ones at 30 pounds each?

    Cheers

Could just be age/wear and tear, or it maybe that the ide/sata connections have become loose over time, try re-inserting them see if it helps. If not, like you say, they're not expensive any more.
