Will I be able to power my new system from my existing '480W Tagan TG480-U01 PSU' or will I need something with a bit more grunt?
New system:
Core i7 920
3x2GB XMS3 1600MHz
Asus Rampage II GENE
XFX GTX260
Thanks for any help :)

28A on the 12V rail is kinda weak but it will run it without no problems if you're not overclocking. However I'd rather upgrade it as that PSU is quite old now.
No 550W or more should do it.
Should be enough AFAIK
If that's the same model 480W Tagan PSU which I used to have, and it's 3+ years old, DO NOT use it any more. The capacitors will be bulging significantly and it will be a danger to all your other components. Check the voltages with a multimeter to see whether it is out of spec by more than the maximum of 5%.
I have an even older model 420W Tagan, and it powered my rig fine for testing.
That should be ample I'd say :)
Just out of interest how many 6 pin PCI-e connectors does the 480W Tagan TG480-U01 have?
Just the one, if I recall correctly.
I'm looking at none going by hexus.

Mine must be a newer version. It has 2 x 4 pin PCIe connectors.
PCIe connectors come in 6 (2 rows of 3 pin stack connector) or 8/6+2 (2 rows of 4/3+1) pin variety. I'm assuming you're talking about the VGA molex connectors, which will do the job (plus a molex->PCIe adaptor).
For older PCI-E cards they used molex/floppy connectors so I'm guessing that's what he meant.
For a 480W PSU, 28A is pretty low, although back in the days that PSU was good, PSUs seem to be one of the fastest to die out (well RAM/HDD/GFX card usually dies out faster) even if they're from good producers.
I'm saying it's enough for non overclocking but if overclocked to 1.4v on the vcore with the rest running it could get up to perhaps 300w on peak which mean the system could just shut down.

Not sure how you'd view this source but here you see that with 1.5v on vcore with a GTX260 and i7 920 too, they have a peak power consumption reading of 410w, even with 1.344v it drew 310W.
So basically as I said:
Your PSU is kinda old now so it's a bit risky but it should run it fine provided you don't overclock.
