    Quick overclocking question

I'm currently running my Q6600 at 3.0GHz at 1.2V. My question is, how necessary is it to run the RAM at half the speed of the FSB? FSB is at 1333MHz, so should I keep RAM at 800MHz or drop it to 667MHz to achieve a 2:1 divider?

    Thanks, Michael

    Re: Quick overclocking question

Running the RAM speed at 2:1 on this occasion won't get you any benefits. The 2:1 divider would be no more efficient than the one you're using, so you'd only lose RAM speed.

Were you referring to uppong your FSB to 1600 (400x4)? If so then your RAM would be at 800 on a 2:1, thus giving you a performance gain from your increased FSB.

What motherboard are you using? With a good board you should be able to achieve a 1600 FSB without too much hassle.

    Re: Quick overclocking question

As far as I know it's not at all necessary to run your RAM with a 2:1 divider. I have a similar setup: Q6600 at 3.0GHz, 333MHz clock (so FSB is at 1333 as it's quad pumped), and my RAM at 1GHZ. So my divider is at 1.5:1 (i.e. 333MHz DDR = 666 MHz effective clock => 666MHz * 1.5 = 1GHz)

Specs are in My System <----

My Q6600 isn't stable/cool enough for my liking at the dizzying heights of 3.6GHz, I'm quite comfortable with 3.0GHz (already a 0.6GHz overclock). It's just that a long time ago when I first started OCing, having a 2:1 divider was all the rage so I wanted to check what the latest thoughts on it are

    Re: Quick overclocking question

Nah, the 2:1 divider thing was a reference to the FSB that 800MHz would be 2:1, it was all about the 1600MHz FSB.
