    PATA to SATA Converter

    Hi folks

Have a WD PATA (2.5" notebook) HDD that is seemingly virus infected (full info).

My PC has a SATA HDD interface and the order sheet lists "Hard Drive 250GB Serial ATA II 7200Rpm".

The plan is to remove HDD from laptop and format on the PC using a PATA > SATA adaptor.

However, not entirely sure whether "SATA II" is any different from "SATA".

Plan to order this product (LINK) - could a nice person kindly double-check that it's the right one for the job?

Scan have one a little cheaper (LINK) but the shipping kills it (no free delivery below £20)

    Cheers

    Re: PATA to SATA Converter

If it's a notebook drive, then no. 2.5" IDE drives use a 44pin connector that carries the power as well as the data signal, and that Maplin connector looks to be a standard desktop 40pin IDE connector.

I'd strongly recommend getting a USB -> IDE / SATA convertor, as this will be much more flexible in the future. Here's a few options:

    Plexus Adapter
    Startech Adapter

Maplin do a similar device but @ more than 2x the cost! Scan don't seem to have anything quite the same sadly.

    Re: PATA to SATA Converter

I've tried a couple of PATA to SATA converters off dealextreme and they didnt work
I would go with the USB to PATA suggestion

    Re: PATA to SATA Converter

I take it your laptop hard disc lookis like this

That's a 2.5" PATA it's 42pin you cannot directly plug it into a motherboard IDE port via a ribon cable, however you can get an adaptor to plug it in.

    E.G. http://www.lindy.co.uk/31-2-to-21-2-...ter/70189.html
I actually have that exact one at work which I use to recover data off laptop hard drives, you plug it into the hard drive then connect up a IDE ribon cable to the motherboard and plug in the molex.
Here we go still the same basic thing but £2.50 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-5-Laptop-to-...item20ade839af

I think what you are originally asking for is a SATA to PATA adaptor, not the other way around.
However I don't know of any 2.5" pata hard drive to sata adaptors, only pata to usb or normal motherboard IDE socket to sata socket adaptors.

definately, the USB-PATA converters are ideal as they allow you to hotplug, never had a problem with the one I bought on ebay for about 2 quid.
