PC connected via HDMI freezes randomly

We have a compact Dell Vostro connected to a Sony LCD panel via a HDMI cable.

The PC seems to randomly freeze and totally lock up - with a hard reboot being the only option available to recover it. It also seems to loose the signal on the screen, again, a hard reboot required.

* The PC's not too hot (it's on top of a cupboard in a large cool meeting room)
* I've run memtest86 all weekend and it passed with no hitches.
* Event viewer doesn't give any additional clues

So, does anyone have any ideas? - It will look pretty crap if someone's on a call sharing their screen and the PC just locks up :/

We don't have any other machines to try with HDMI ports, I could try using a DVI-VGA connector and connecting to the panel via vga, not sure what that would prove.

Is the system still under warrenty? If so I would call dell and see if they have any suggestions. I am guessing you have tryed latest drivers? Bios updates? If you run at a lower resolution does it do the same? Also is it possable you have a faulty HDMI cable?

Yeah it's still under warranty, I just don't fancy faffing on the phone with Dell for ages. I've not had much luck with that in the past, and being a cheap Vostro you get palmed off on the worst technical support :/ lol.

Have no tried at a lower resolution no, I could give that a try. Fairly certain it's not the HDMI cable, otherwise I'd expect the memtest which ran all weekend to have gone a bit dodgy :/

I know exactly what you mean about the dell tech support, they have been getting ever worse since massive layoff's in glasgow about 3 months ago. If your are still having no luck with any of my suggestions it sounds like a hardware fault. May I suggest that you e-mail them or try the online chat it saves alot of the langauge barrer that you face with 1-2 hour phone call . Also I know its probably not something you want to do, but have you tryed a full format?
