Laptop memory upgrade

Well I'm thinking about upgrading my laptop memory from 2gb (2x1gb) pc5300 to 3 or 4gb. I have seen aria have pc6400 2gb corsair value select memory for £29 or theres 2gb pc5300 for £32. (I assume theres similar around elsewhere but the 6400 seemed like quite a good deal.)

Would I be better off taking the 2 sticks out and replacing with 1x 2gb 6400 with a view to adding another 1 or 2 gb later or is it better to replace 1 of the 5300 sticks in there with a 2gb one?

Am I right in thinking the following...

You cannot mix memory which is different speeds
Vista will only support 3gb of memory but windows 7 will support 4gb.

Is there anything else I need to be aware of when upgrading laptop memory?

You can mix the RAM but it will work at the speed of the slowest stick of RAM.

You could get one stick of 6400 and use it with the 5300 already installed, as previous post it would default to 5300 speed. If you then get another stick of 6400 at a later date and replace the 5300 with it then they will both operate at 6400. Vista will read approx 3.5Gb and W7 will see all 4Gb.

Ah brilliant thats a plan then will get the 6400 2gb and replace one of the 5300 then possibly replace the other 5300 at a later date (or not but it doesnt really matter as the 6400 is cheaper). I can get windows 7 for £30 as a student so will probably do that soon as well.

Then I need to get a new battery then my laptop will be up to scratch again.

One more thing my laptop has a 'mini PCIe' card slot and in the manual it talks about adding a wireless lan card (even though it has wireless lan) are these slots specific? I assume not but in the manual it only talks about wireless lan cards (although that might be because SSDs were not really around back then). Could I for example put a Mini pcie SSD in there like some of the netbooks have?

Oh and one more final thing...

My laptop has a 100gb hard disk split into a main partition and a recovery partition. Now if I were to buy a new hard disk (say a 320gb) is there any way of copying the recovery partition onto an external hard disk (or even both partitions) and then copying them onto the new hard disk once it is installed?

Or if I upgrade the hard disk am I going to have to deal with the lack of recovery partition? I am keen to keep the recovery partition as I am a student and can buy the upgrade edition of windows 7 so would be good to always have a source of windows vista available.

Well I bit the bullet and today bought 4gb of pc 6400 installed it and then nothing... It wont post. It wont post with either or only 1 stick in

any advice? or is it just that its not compatible and i've just wasted £66 quid?

Tried getting support and maybe flashing the bios but being advent support for it is terrible.

Sometimes some SODIMMs are simply not compatible with certain notebooks. I would try booting with one of the SODIMMs first and also try changing which sockets you put the SODIMMs in. OTH,perhaps the RAM is DOA.

Seems unlikely that both sticks are dead tried every arrangement. Bugger. Really could've done with either the memory or the money. Suppose I can try and sell for as close to retail as possible just a real pain in the ass.

You could always try returning the RAM.

Thought I wouldnt be able to as its all been opened and things oh well I've already managed to sell it for only a few quid less than I payed so just going to cut my losses and run.

I should really save the money but a new case is just calling me... saw the xigmatek midgard and really liked it.... hmmmm
