Why are the socket 1156 motherboard still so expensive??

I am still surprised that the cheapest socket 1156 motherboards I can find are around £65 and above!!

I thought that with most of the motherboard logic moved onto the CPU there would be H55 motherboards retailing at £40 to £50 like the old Core2 ones.

The Core i3 530 has started to drop in price to around the £90 mark but still at £65 the H55 motherboards are stubbornly not dropping in price!!

To put this in context I could a X4 925 and a 780G or 785G motherboard for a similar price.

Come on Intel start releasing some budget H55 motherboards!!

Like everything else they're priced on performance/market tolerance, not BoM.

    Prices being kept artificially high?

Or could the boargs be very expensive to produce? The current Intel sockets certainally look a lot more expensive to engineer than the AM2/2+/3 sockets

The Intel motherboards have less logic left on them.

If you look on Scan for example the difference is more obvious even for similarly priced motherboards.

For instance here is the Gigabyte H55M-S2H:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Gigab...-3Gb-s-ATX-VGA

This is the cheapest H55 motherboard on Scan.

Here is the similarly priced Asus M4A785TD-M EVO:

If you go onto Ebuyer the cheapest H55 motherboard is the Intel HUNTER COVE DH55HC:

The cheapest ATX 785G motherboard is the MSI 785GM-E51:

Re: Why are the socket 1156 motherboard still so expensive??

Also remember that with the changes it means Intel now controls the licenses on how the cpu & motherboard communicate.
This has been the whole reason that nvidia has shelved it's motherboard chipset development, intel are refuseing to license it for a sane cost, this in turn means intel now has an effective total monopoly over the chipset and can charge motherboard manufactures what ever they want for the chipset.
It also reduces intel's costs as they don't have to put so much into development of new chipsets because someone else has come up with a better one.

Re: Why are the socket 1156 motherboard still so expensive??

The AMD motherboards have more functionality left on the motherboard so why is the H55 much more highly priced??

The 785G motherboards have to integrate a chip similar onto the motherboard as an HD3450. Even things like PCI-E functionality are on the Core i3 chip. The vast majority of AMD motherboards over £65 also use more expensive solid capacitors and many have enhanced VRMs too. Some even do symmetrical Crossfire for under £90 too.

The socket 775 motherboards were priced so much better!!

These features are all seen in P55 and H55 motherboards costing £90 to £95 and above.

The AMD motherboards must be much more expensive to make.

    That explains a lot!! Thanks!!

    I have another thought though!!

Could it be that Intel is partially subsiding the pricing of the Core i3 chips by making more money on the motherboard??

The actual processor has a die size of 81mm2 and the IGP has a die size of 114mm2 it seems:

    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=46472

The die size of a Q8200 is 164mm2 and the E7200 is 82mm2:

    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=36547

    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=35348

The E5200 and E6300 share the same die size as the E7200:

    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37212

    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=41493

AFAIK people tend to scrutinise actual processor cost more than platform cost.

Considering that the 45NM was process was quite mature perhaps actually the 32NM CPU portion of the Core i3 is not as cheap to make especially when packaged with the lump of silicon which is the IGP.

I think that this and the insight of Pob255 has explained why this pricing difference exists between the socket 1156 motherboards and the socket 775 and socket AM2+ and AM3 ones!

I have to agree really... just begun my AMD collection as a result of my HTPC, and it's quite breathtaking really.

No more bent motherboard pins, so much choice over boards and prices, and you can use a £5 Sempron to test out your top of the range quad-core motherboard.

I think Intel have shot themselves in the foot a bit with LGA775/1156/1366. Being to put an i7 chip into a P35 board would have been very interesting. I naturally lean towards Intel (probably because I've always had Intel processors - initially courtesy of the big manufacturers, and now my first homebuilt PC, which my current PC is based on, because I built it soon after the C2D was released), but as things stand I don't think I would take an Intel board right now for a new desktop.

I have a collection og AMD systems, and only one Intel (excluding laptops) at home. They are just so much easier to put together a basic system. And the AM2 systems don't have a problem with weird things being in the first 16x PCIe slot
