Vortexx - Ideal Replacement For Stock HD4850?
Hello,
I've lived with my absolute crappy stock HD4850 Cooler for a good 18 months now - And now I need a new cooler - I'm tihnking:
Akasa Vortexx
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AKASA...e-BLUE-LED-fan
Also, I assume I need some Tim clean - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Akasa...aning-Solution , please help me on this - first time I replace the GPU stuff.
Anyhow - Will this suffice? I idle at near 100c, 90c when i clean out the dust from the cooler, so it is needed.
Also, what can I buy for £7 from scan so I get mah free delivery?
Thanks!
Nelsaidi
EDIt
Note- My case is an antec 300 and due to me wanting silence I've only got two output fans running at Low (antec tri cools).
Re: Vortexx - Ideal Replacement For Stock HD4850?
AFAIK the vortexx works well on a 4850, however it does need to be the original stock card & cooler
if you've got a non-stock card, eg the sapphire one

Then the vortexx will not fit.
Re: Vortexx - Ideal Replacement For Stock HD4850?
Yeah - I'm aware of that and it is the stock cooler - hence the crappy cooling xD
Re: Vortexx - Ideal Replacement For Stock HD4850?
The Akasa Vortexx Neo could be fitted on my short PCB HD4830 and many HD4830 and HD4850 cards share similar PCBs:

Re: Vortexx - Ideal Replacement For Stock HD4850?
I fitted one onto a 4850 of mine and it took loads off of the temperatures, i will say one thing though it doesn't cool (contact) the voltage regulators (think thats what they are) so i took a hack saw to that part of the original cooler and refitted it as well as the Neo Vortexx.
I can't take the credit for that little mod though, i stole the idea someone i know.

That little trick has been done with the 3850 as well ;) probably the best way to get a heatsink for the VRM :)

Ok I should of added "probably" and "make sure it will" to my post
But your card doesn't have the big cap's between the gpu and io plate like that sapphire card does, the Vortexx will simply not fit on that card.
Re: Vortexx - Ideal Replacement For Stock HD4850?
Errr - I'm not going to saw half my stock GPU :P - Suddenly the cheap is not so cheap - Dont scan stock any heatsinks of some sort that will manage to cover the VRM's?

Stole that idea from me :)

I cannot tell a lie . . . . it was indeed Blaine that mentioned doing it :)

If you are replacing it because its not very good at cooling / noisey whats the problem? http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y1/...milies/huh.gif

Peter - I'd rather from Scan - Free *next* day delivery :P
Also - I refuse to saw it in half :P - So, Will sometihng like http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Therm...or-HR-03RevAV2 do the job? I'm worried that it clashes with the cooler and both dont fit at the same time - Having no heatsink is also a bad idea thoughw. I never knew it would be this complicated xD - Good thing I asked!
EDIT(2): I guess now I need some Thermal Paste then? :S - So, Arctic Silver 5 I Guess - I think that means I've got free delivery now :P
Re: Vortexx - Ideal Replacement For Stock HD4850?
I used a hammer and chizel and snapped it off. :)
Re: Vortexx - Ideal Replacement For Stock HD4850?
Hmm £5 for stick on heatsinks that are "generic" and prone to fall of if the chips they are stuck on to aren't cleaned properly. Or a free, with 2 mins work with a hack saw (or hammer and chisel if your names Blaine :) ), heatsink thats is screwed on and designed specifically for the job?
Know which i would go for ;)
Re: Vortexx - Ideal Replacement For Stock HD4850?
those VRMS get hot, i would reccomend using the vrm cover from stock, the vortex neo does have tiny holes that blow air from the fan down to the vrms too.
