your views on the ageing sk41g as a backup comp?

    hi there

just wondering what views or oppinions any1 had on the sk41g,i already have an sn41g2 and just fancied replacing my compaq presario with a cheap sk41g,has any1 here still got 1,,are they still decent enuff in this day and age to use as an everyday gaming rig etc?

also are there any issues with them,,i think i read somewhere that the psu,s suck on them becouse there made by enhance or something,or do they use the achme psu like my sn41g2?

ive just ordered 1 from micro direct to replace my compaq presario becouse its jus getting a bit boring and im just looking for an excuse to build a cheap little shuttle,,i already have all the insides as im using the xp1800 and 512ddr from my compaq and ive got a spare 60gb maxtor sitting with all my movies on and a spare black samsung dvd/cdrw combi drive,,the sk41g cost £144 inc delivery!
    any views would be appreciated

    thnx

Is that the supplier who Ceased Trading 24-07-2003? Whomever it is it seems really dumb and pointless sensoring it out, after all we're all capable of making up our own minds on things aren't we. Is this what you have anyway (supplier is irrelevant) ...

    http://www.cclcomputers.com/specs/ba...NESHUSK41G.htm

IIRC KM266 is basicly a VIA KT266 and as such that would mean you're limited to 133/266FSB (maybe a touch more with o/c'ing) and you may find the very useful Tbred/Barton won't work in there. Still as a small PC it's still great and a Pally XP1800+ is a good choice in there and still very powerful without kicking off the heat of the higher Pally's. The PSU (again IIRC) was very poor but not overly limiting the expandability inside anyway. The main problem is gaming, the onboard gfx are dire for any basic 3D gaming but a GF4MX, GF-FX5200 or Radeon 7500-9200 ideally 128MB will all significantly boost the gaming ability to a level where most games will run very happily. GF-FX5200 and Radeon 8500-9200 all supply you with DX8 which is wise as many games now impliment the DX8 optimisations and features, plus they should be £50-75 too.

XP1800+ 256-512MB and a £50-75 gfx card will stand you in good stead and the PSU should easily cope with these.

    My wifes got an SK41G with a XP2000+, 512Mb Crucial PC2100 and a MSI FX5200 128Mb Personal Cinema.

We use it as a Multimedia centre (DVD, CD, DivX, VCD, SVCD) box, and she uses it for games.

It's still more than capable of playing UT2K3 on

SK41Gs are good little systems, no reason why it wouldnt make a great 2nd PC.

The SK41s have a mix of PSUs. They are great little performers, I used one as my main system until yesterday and it still has its 4200ti, 512, xp2400, so its no slouch in any sense of the word. In some ways using it as a download box is a waste of good shuttle but for £135 you can afford to do just that.

Yeah 4200 is a little more power hungry and a little larger than GF4MX, GF-FX5200 or Radeon 7500-9200 but still shouldn't put too much strain on your PSU/PC. XP1800+ with 4200 is an awesome little gaming rig!
