Alienware notebooks

Im kind of looking for a laptop and stumbled across these. For some reason i had ignored alienware in the past, however these notebooks are damn nice , basicly i wanted to know if they had any bad reputation, or known problems. What are Area-51m like as a brand. It says here in my book that they make the systems for them. Thanks for any help

Apparantly the battery life is poor though.

I was also thinking about having one, but there are alternatives on the market for a lot less.
You will think im drunk when i say this, but seriously, check out PC World. They have some really good deals on laptops.

Yup, PC World do good deals on laptops and even better you can see the laptop before you buy it.

For desktops, the build quality and design isn't quite as important as the specs. For laptops, build quality and design are top priority. It doesn't matter how many fps it gets in UT2004 if you don't it and it shatters into a million pieces or the keyboard gets knackered easily. If you go into PC World, you can actually get a feel before you buy.

Those IBM ones with the shock protection look pretty cool too.

Alienware is for ripped off posh kids with money.
pc world have tried to sell naff equipment at expensive prices. never shopped there, never will.

You should check out the Dell Inspiron laptops.

ATI 9700 128mb for just over $1,100 inc VAT I mean that in pounds lol. if u tried getting roughly the same from anywhere else, you looking at $200-400 extra.

Don't the Alienware laptops have modular graphic cards or something, so you can upgrade later? That's something not normally found on laptops... yet!

I bought a Dell 8500 a year or so ago (with a geforce 4 mobile chipset) and have been VERY happy with it. The screen is awesomely good (1680x1050 - 25ms response), and it has been holding up quite well with being dragged around the world...

A friend of mine bought a laptop from PC world (not my recommendation I may add) and he has had nothing but trouble with it they had it 2 months before they had sorted it and now its broken again, he wanted to take it away with him (gone to iraq) and they couldn't even sort it out in time for him.

After his experience I wouldn't buy anything from them (well maybe something, bought a mouse mat yesterday ).

alienware lappys are very good, look damn s3x3y and have the unique things like modular graphics. The customer service is top notch too..BUT they are very overpriced, if you have money to burn then get one (i would if i won the lottery =0)

if you aint burnin money for fun every night tho then i recommend a Dell laptop (check out the dell outlet for some ace prices http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/de...=dfo&l=en&c=uk )

radeon9600pro mobile
1gig ram
some bigassed widescreen display
80gig HD
built in 10/100 wired lan aswell as WiFi
DvD+r writer
free case, replacement covers etc

for £1400 from the outlet; and its great, battery life is about 3/4hrs pending on what its used for, it cna play UT2004 well enough with the holy s**t settings on, and gives a good framerate on farCry too. The widescreen makes it great for dvds too =)

Yea baby this is what im using now Tis quality! I can play farcry on pretty high settings just fine, although i paid less and mine is configured a little differently. I got nearly 5 hours battery life watching divx last nite

Please don't get one of these. They are horrible! Absolutely huge, extremely heavy. A laptop is meant for mobility. Those things take the meaning out of mobility. Laptops should have never got as big as those.

Dorza, the key thing is what do you want to use the machine for? We issue Dell Latitude D600s here at work and they're GREAT corporate machines, but wouldn't be a lot of use for gaming - as standard the Mobility Radeon 9000 only ships with 32MB memory. Do you want to use it for office-y stuff or games, does it need to have good battery life, is weight an issue, are you actually going to be using it on the move or just moving from mains supply to mains supply? Speccing or recommending a laptop without considering this stuff is not a good idea, since unlike a desktop machine if you buy the wrong chassis to start with it's difficult (if not impossible) to put it right later. Tell us what YOU want the machine to do, and informed recommendations are a bit easier.
