Mis-described mouse

Just bought a basic optical mouse online to replace mine, same make/model, so far so simple.

Checked the full description anyway, & yep, description says USB and PS/2 connectivity, comes with PS/2 plug included, etc.
What I got is a USB only mouse, no plug, no mouse driver, & a few minor things different to stated, yet same model no. as my old one.

I don't exactly buy a lot of kit & can imagine if you do the odd cock-up is inevitable, but this is one little purchase, at the extreme outermost shallow end of things, you'd think they could get something so basic right. Too much to expect?

^ Did try that, but new mouse does not seem to be up for it - just get no light/life. I assumed they must be different at some level? (Currently have both mice plugged in, this cannot be a good idea methinks. )

Have you rebooted with the mouse pluged in via the ps/2 adaptor?
I've found many ps/2 based mice are not "hot swappable" and you have to reboot the pc with it in before it will respond.

I turned off PC before removing old mouse & replacing, as per my original mouse instructions.

I had a similar problem when I bought a mouse that was suppose to be suitable for left or right hand, When it arrived it was a right handed mouse and they expected me to pay the postage to return it to them

If it does not work then I could only assume it must be faulty.

Assuming you got this from a retailer, use the DSR and cancel. Also, inform them that as the product did not match their description (assuming the description you mentioned was the seller's description), they are also in breach of the Sale of Goods Act and the collection will therefore be at their expense.

It does work as a USB mouse, & it would not make much odds to me to use it that way, except for having 1 less available port which is why I went for the ps/2 option. Just deciding if I can be bothered to complain or not... Point is, with this sort of simple item I can tell it's not as described and decide if it matters. With something more complicated I may be oblivious to a difference in spec. Where I've had the same item already, especially, I'd expect to not even have to check, just assume I'm safe to order 'same again'.

I don't think he really needs advice as to how to get a USB mouse to work, evenif it did come without a PS2 adaptor

My take on it is that if the retailer is so lax about a simple item such as a mouse, what has it got wrong with more complex products.

But then again i could have got the wrong end of the stick

Pretty much, yes just a small moan, purely as a non-tech who relies on descriptions.

Though I'd still be interested as to why new mouse won't work with existing adapter (I may have a further tinker with it to be sure it doesn't, before deciding what to say to retailer - if at all. For such a small thing costwise, I'd only be taking it up with them on principle anyway).

Oh I remember the days of PS/2 to serial mouse adapters...

Where one converter would work for one mouse but not for another....

^ It's not a ps/2 to serial adapter, just a straight usb to ps/2 adapter for a ps/2 port. Either way it doesn't like my new mouse. (yes old mouse working, but was getting creaky, hence replacement).
I rebooted today with mouse plugged in, as Pob255 suggested - I do have light now, but no movement, and device not recognised. Hmm.

I dont suppose you have another adapter at hand to try. Whilst make and model may be the same the internal board revision may be different and hence it may not be owrking with that particular adapter.

I have half a dozen MS USB to PS/2 adapters on my desk and would be happy to pop one out in the post to you if you need.

You could drop the retailer an email exaplaining your woes and how you expected the item to arrive as described. At the end of the day they are people too and not everyone out there are money grabbing £$"£$'s. Could have been a simple mistake.
