    HTPC Build: Take 2

Right people, I'm building an HTPC. Partly because I'm fed up of waiting for Scan to get some half-decent components in, and partly because if I don't do it soon I'm afraid that a certain poster who mentions his choice of vehicle in his username might have me killed.

I've given up on Zotac, because they're inept. I've given up on the P55, because it isn't what I want. So for the very first time in my life, I may get an AMD machine. But I know nothing about AMDs, so I would like some advice. Here comes my build

    Case (Inc 120W PSU) - Compucase 8K01 - £46.99
    Motherboard - J&W Minix 780-SP128MB - £99.88
    Processor - AMD Phenom II X3 705e 2.5 GHz - £92.63
    RAM - 2x2GB SODIMMs - £73.60
    60mm Case Fan - Scythe Mini-Kaze 60mm - £6.05
    SSD - Corsair X32 - £104.56
    CPU Cooler - Silverstone NT07 LP - £15.22
    Optical Drive - Samsung SN S083C - £29.36
    2.5" Drive Mount - Scythe Twin Mounter - £4.08
Optical Drive Cable - AKASA AK-CB050 SATA cable for slimine opticals - £3.98
    Wireless Keyboard + Trackpad - Keysonic ACK-612RF - £24.66

    £501

So I need some advice on which processor to get, and I don't really like the look of that CPU cooler - any that I should consider?

I've also seen warnings that I'll need a special cable to plug the notebook drive into the computer, I figure I might need a 3.5" to 2.5" hard drive adapter, and someone also warned that the PSU included in the case was very loud and you should replace it.

    What do you reckon?

I assume you have considered the 40GB version of the Intel X25-V SSD?

The CPU compatibility list has no mention of the Athlon II X3 but the Athlon II X2 and X4 are mentioned:

    http://www.jwele.com/motherboard_detail.php?419#_cpu

Since the motherboard can only take 65W processors I would be looking at a Phenom II X3 705E:

    Re: HTPC Build: Take 2

If you go for the Sempron deal it won't unlock with a SB700. Not sure how much energy the AthlonII tricores will use so 120W maybe too little anyway..... All the AMD CPUs are retail; they come with a cooler that looks as crap as the Akasa you have specced. Frostytech has a review of the standard AMD heatsink with sound testing to give some idea.

Not tempted by mATX? A lovely shiny 780g board could be yours for about £50!

EDIT at 98W load for a 240 not sure I would be happy on a 120W PSU from a brand I am unfamilar with.

    CPU Cooler alternatives:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Silve...ink-Fan-Hi-End
    http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/pro...ers/vf2000-led

more expensive, but look cooler and should be fairly quiet.

you won't need any cable adapter for the SSD drive, it uses standard SATA power and data cables
I would imagine it would be the same for the optical drive too, although I've not come across one on my desk yet.

As for suggesting a CPU, I'm sure we could think of someone who would be best to advice on that front.... *cough*-CAT-*cough*

Definitely considered the Intel, it's the one I want. Depends how quickly it reaches the shops really, although I reckon I should be able to get one.

I guess if the option on eBuyer for an Athlon II X3 is £76 for a 2.3GHz chip, paying an extra £15 for a Phenom with an extra 200MHz per core and a bigger cache isn't really a lot - in other words I'm not losing a ton of money by taking a Phenom instead of an Athlon.

    Watching with interest once again.

If you want, I can dig up my list of parts/prices/ideas as of December 2009. Things have moved on slightly (prices have shot up, new tech is out etc) but the basics remain the same. Then I can watch you build it and learn from your mistakes

What chipset was that built on then?

To be honest I've gone through so many phases I don't know what planet I'm on with regard to this build at the moment, but I think I'm set on this.

I had my Zotac build, which I wanted Scan to do for me 3XS style because I was still reeling from when my Hiper Type-R blew up, and then various components kept failing, leaving me out of pocket and without a computer for 8 months. Then I gave up because I don't feel as if Scan are ever going to get stock of the I-E revision.

Then I had that brainwave about the P55 build, but I was majorly put off when I realised that I'd need external graphics for that. Dual-core processor plus external graphics card was never going to be fun on a 120W PSU... and it was going to cost a bomb, so that one's been ditched.

I'm much more optimistic this time... no more Scan means I can buy whatever motherboard I want, which means I can go AMD and get a value for money processor, and no more hassle. On the flipside, I've got to build it myself so the cable management will look like Ken Dodd's hair, but I'm sure it'll turn out okay in the end.

    Especially not VWs .

I'm informed that Saab runs moose-tests on their cars however, they're much more safe.

You could always get a Core i3 530(which has an IGP) and a H55 motherboard for around £150.

However despite having low power consumption there are some problems:
1.)The currently available H55 motherboards are micro ATX or ATX
2.)For around £95 to £100 there are faster AMD processors available

I'm in pretty much the same position as you.

I started with wanting a Popcorn Hour C-200, moved to think a nettop (Asus) was where its at, then I saw the Asus O!Play, then another nettop (ASRock 330HT BD with a DVB-T dongle), finally deciding it was more fun (and gave more nerd points) to self build.

I've gone through so many "in my head" builds that I'm not sure where I am any more.

Mobos considered: Zotac 9300, Zotac ION, Intel DG45FC, Jetway NC81, Asus M4A78-VM (or EM) and so on. CPUs: E6300, X2 240, 5050e and so on.

Cases is where I want to spend my money though and my current fave is the Lian Li PC-C37B.

Then I spot something else and round we go again.

    Re: HTPC Build: Take 2

TBH, an ideal setup would be a sub £100 H55 based mini-ITX motherboard and a Core i3 530. Even though I am not that impressed by the Core i3 in terms of value for money they do seem great for a mini-ITX build. However I suspect that any mini ITX H55 motherboard is not going to be cheap!

However for an HTPC even a Phenom II X3 705E would be fine for years IMHO.

All the prebuilts bother me for two reasons

    1) I don't think they'll cope with 1080p .mkv files - in my experiments that requires a dual core 2.83GHz processor to function properly (2.83GHz because I was using my Q9550) - and most of the prebuilts are Atoms or similar.
    2) I really like the look of media portal, and don't want to be stuck with some rubbish gui where I just get endless lists of programs by title.

My only consistent desire was mini-itx. I'm very pushed for space - to the point where cramming my Wii somewhere wasn't easy, so a micro-atx is impossible.

Beyond that, it's been all over the place really

I agree completely, but seeing as the only H55 mini-itx I've seen is Zotac at CES, my optimism is nil. I wouldn't rely on Zotac to build anything more complicated than a cheese sandwich to a deadline.

It's a pity, but on the other hand quite exciting, I've fancied getting an AMD build for a while now. Although saying it like that, it all seems a bit sordid . Maybe I'm an Intel fanboy deep down...

    Re: HTPC Build: Take 2

One word of warning if you've ordered the minix - the northbridge is reputed to run *very* hot - like, seriously problematically hot if it doesn't have active cooling. I believe J&W bundle a fan & bracket with the board now, but if not you might want to monitor it carefully.

Are you doing a build log for this then? It'd be a shame if I didn't get hassled for not updating it again... :chortle:

Actually, one thing I would be very interested in is whether you can set this board up for Hybrid Crossfire - I'm watching a 3470 on ebay with that in mind...
