Jetway Combo - AM2/AM3 motherboards supporting DDR

It looks like the CPU support BIOS Updates have dried up for my current ASROCK 939Dual-SATA2 with AM2CPU upgrade board. As a result I'm on the lookout for something else that will allow a nice gradual upgrade path similar to the one I've enjoyed over the last few years.

The best candidate at the moment seems to be the Jetway HA08 Combo L. It's a combined 790GX board offering native support for AM2/AM3 and DDR2/DDR3. The board is full height ATX and supports dual 8 lane PCI-E 2.0 Crossfire (or 16x for single graphics card). It'll take a maximum of 4GB DDR2 (2 slots available) or 8GB DDR3 (4 slots available) but not at the same time. 140w CPUs are also supported

Jetway's product page is here: http://www.jetway.com.tw/jw/motherbo...=HA08%20COMBOL

A review can be found here: http://www.pro-clockers.com/motherbo...therboard.html

MSI announced a similar board last year but I don't think it ever saw the light of day. These Jetway boards seem to be available on a few chinese sites. There's also a similar micro ATX board on Newegg in the USA but it's limited to 4GB DDR2 or DDR3 which rather limits the upgrade potential.

Due to the almost complete lack of full size Jetway boards available from UK retailers I've put in some enquiries. I've contacted Jetway themselves plus one UK retailer about getting them in the UK. Will let you know if I hear anything posititve.

    Are you looking for one?

I've seen a 2nd hand one kicking around on a few boards(!) buts its mATX.

I warn you that the bios updates have dried up on some of these too.

The current Phenom II and Athlon II processors have both DDR2 and DDR3 memory controllers in the CPU!

Scan have had the Asus M3A78-T on offer for under £60 several time sin the last few weeks:

Re: Jetway Combo - AM2/AM3 motherboards supporting DDR

I've seen that second hand one too. Not really interested in the mATX board, as it's limited to 4GB DDR2 or 4GB DDR3. Hardly much of an upgrade path, which is what I see as the attraction. The 125w CPU limit could be an issue in future too.

I had a look through the lineup and only the HA08 Combo boards support more than 4GB or 140w CPUs.

BIOS updates are always potentially an issue. It's only the lack of BIOS updates for my current setup that's having me look beyond my current board.

    Edit:

Yes I know. The attraction here is the ability to run either DDR2 or DDR3 on the same motherboard. I could literally swap out one component for now.

It just appeals to the gradual upgrader in me.

Did you get the upgrade slot for you ASrock board? I had one six months ago but couldn't find and adapter to take me to 940. TBH I can't see another board like the dualSATAII again.

Why not just go DDR3? I can't see the advantage in going o DDR2 and then DDR3. Thuban 'may' have a DDR2 controller on it but after then its DDR3 all the way. Bulldozer in 2011 may not even us ethe AM3 boards available atm.

Re: Jetway Combo - AM2/AM3 motherboards supporting DDR

Yes I'm currently running the AM2CPU upgrade board with 4GB DDR2 and an Athlon X2 5000+ black edition, which is clocked to 3GHz. Hence I'm just looking at dropping existing hardware into another motherboard.

While in theory the AM2CPU upgrade board could be capable of supporting AM3 CPUs, ASROCK have stated that they will not be supported on the 939Dual-SATA2 because of the size limitation of the BIOS chip. So as it surns out I'm on a dead end in terms of CPU upgrades (barring the actions of some genius modder).

To be honest, the current CPU is fine for most of the stuff I throw at it. I have a spare hard drive and a fresh retail copy of Windows 7 sitting around at the moment so the most convenient time to upgrade motherboard would be around now. I just dont fancy forking out for CPU and RAM at the same time.

The key here is price. It's only worth getting the Jetway board if it's price competitive with other similar featured boards that are DDR3 only. If it turned out to be much more expensive, I'd have to save up a while longer. I wouldn't consider it for a new build. It's only that I have existing components ready to use that makes it attractive.

Edit: If I wanted to use existing components without the potential for DDR3 upgrade, something like the MSI DKA790GX might do.

MSI announced a board called 790GX-8D last year that was similar. That had 4 slots each for DDR2 and DDR3. I don't believe it ever made it to retail though.

I've seen a few far-east retailers have the HA08 Combo L but I don't fancy ordering from there. Shipping would probably swallow any cost benefit I might otherwise get. RMA would also be a nightmare if it was required. Don't fancy dealing with a BIOS that isn't in English either.

    Found an alternative from J&W:

The JW-790GXT-FUSION. Spec looks nigh on perfect - Spec is as per the Jetway board but there's an extra PCI-E x16 slot: http://www.jwele.com/motherboard_detail.php?586#_spec

Only has 2 DDR3 slots but will take up to 8GB.

Well the Jetway board is looking like a non-starter in terms of availability. I heard back from Jetway Europe, who don't have any in stock and didn't mention plans to stock them. Sounds like no Europe suppliers.

Re: Jetway Combo - AM2/AM3 motherboards supporting DDR

Right. Jetway HA08 Combo board located in Norway. Will cost me about £110 shipped and insured. Another site in South Africa would cost me a tenner extra but I certainly don't fancy ordering from Africa.

That's £10-20 more than getting the equivalent MSI, Gigabyte or Asus DDR3 only 790GX board from Scan. About £30-40 more than the DDR2 only versions.

    Hmm. Decisions, decisions...

Edit: Forget that. It's more like £93 shipped. I think it didn't include tax (although I suppose the UK taxman might have a peice as Norway aren't in the EU). That's settled then. Ordered.
