Was going to get a HD 4890 or a HD 5770 but I found a XFX HD 4850 512mb here, for £80. Postage is £5 and it is next day delivery, so I decided to go for that!
I almost went for a Palit GeForce GTS 250 Green 1024MB, which would have been £92.50 including delivery.
So do you guys think I made the right choice or should I have spent £7.50 more and gotten a card with a gig of memory?

Depends on the resolution you'll be running it at. Anything high and 512mb shows it's weaknesses, although the 4850 is still a fairly good card.

You could have got an HD4850 1GB for a bit more although the XFX card has a nicer cooler IMHO:

No it doesn't the xfx 4850 cooler is not very good, it's passable, not much of an improvement over the original stock cooler, looks good from the out side but inside it's just a smallish aluminium heat sink.
However all told for £80 that's an ok price if new, personally I'd of looked for a 4780 which can be got for around £90-100
But if you've already bought it I'd not worry.

To be honest I paid £75 each for them in November so it's not a bad price to sell it for, but I was quite surprised. I keep seeing these type of threads pop up and struggle to understand why it was so hard to sell. Even eBay prices weren't that great.
I went for the ASUS HD4850, as it has a fairly good cooler, which to my ears at least, is fairly inaudible, even after a good element of gaming. However I have no idea what price these are retailing at.
Otherwise, unless you are going for stupidly high resolutions/quality, the 4850 is a good all rounder
If it was 2nd hand then at £80 they saw you coming.
At one point a few months back you could pick the 4850 up for around £65, that was because suppliers and e-tailers where flogging off all there excess stock as the 5xxx series came out.
but the price has gone back up now and there are far fewer about.

I was very very tempted by that 4870; was tempted to come in at the next price drop but Zak swooped in. Was concerned by the seat of your pants cooler, no ram sinks and no reviews though.
@OP it isn't a bad deal. Remember you've got warranty and a good card. The cooler is meant to be good too. It is not just all about looks though as the thermal performance under load is exceptional, especially considering the low noise levels.

No it is brand new. Also my monitor only supports 1600x1200, but I will probably play at 1280x1024 at absolute most. Also as I mentioned in a different thread I only have a 400watt PSU, so anything more might have put it under strain, so that was a consideration as well, (probably should have got the GTS 250 green really but I like ATI).
Were selling 1gb 4850s brand new for £60 recently...
