Help - laptop display not working correctly

    Heya all,

I've got 2 laptop problems - both related to there displays.

    1) Acer Travelmate 2350 - 14.1 XGA screen on Intel GME 82852 gfx controller

This screen is semi-works. Its fine except for the screen having a blueish hue. The problem is from initial boot so it is not a software broblem. This problem started about 2 months after I had upgraded the CPU from a Celeron M360 to a Centrino M750 (or M755 - can't remember which one I got!). I have replaced the LCD screen cable hoping the old one had worn out some how but this had no effect. It works perfectly fine on an external monitor.

    2) Dell Latitude d630 - 12.1 WXGA screen on a Nvidia quadro nv135 (i think!)

This laptop no longer displays to the screen, even after a cable change. It was acting up a few months before with lots of dot crawl like issues which were fixed usually by moving the screen hinge about. A\Not there is no display on the LCD screen and the external display is really bad - the res looks low, looks like its working on 16 colours and has radom squares over the place (I'll try to get an image of it uploaded). This sounds like a dud graphics card and given that I have no electronic gear (to identify dead componants and replace them) it sounds like a mobo switch is the only way to sort this out.

Any input from you will be much appreciated - thanks!

About the Dell D630, I reckon you're right about the dud graphics card. Its NV Quadro NVS 135M is based on the 8600M GT chip; infamous for its 'bad bumps' which will inevitably lead to GPU failure. No display or display corruption are common symptoms of said 'bad bumps', unfortunately this means you'll need a motherboard replacement.

    Thanks for the reponse!

Given what you said about the NSV 135M and its bad bumps problem, would it be a better idea not to bother with a replacement motherboard as this'll cost in the region of 100 quid which may be better spent on a more reliable replacement?

Re: Help - laptop display not working correctly

If you feel you've had your D630 for an unreasonable amount of time, you may be able to get it repaired by Dell free of charge under the Sale of Goods Act since the machine was inherently faulty.

I had no trouble arranging a repair for my Dell machine a while ago even when the warranty had expired. I invoked the SoGA and everything was sorted in days.

    Give Dell a call.

Failing that; sell the D630 as spares and repairs.
