    Cpu Cooler Choice?

I've decided that it's time for me to upgrade my HSF from the stock Intel one, my cpu is an LGA775 socket and I have narrowed down my decision to two fans:
    An Akasa AK-960E Here

    OR

    A Xigmatek HDT-S1283 Here

or if you know of a better one please suggest it.

    Thanks,
    Steve

I think the Xigmatek is the better performer of the two you've suggested.

Others that I've seen do better in tests:
    Prolimatech Megahalems
    OCZ VEndetta 2.

Out of those 2, Xigmatek for sure, tower coolers fare better than top-down coolers generally and as it uses a 120mm fan it will be pretty silent and much more silent than the Akasa.

    Re: Cpu Cooler Choice?

Hey.. how cool is this? I've fitted both of those to machines in the past

The Akasa is a fairly run of the mill cooler. It's only a tad larger than an Intel default on. It benefits from having the ability to turn the fan upside down in a small form factor case if the PSU is right above it so that the airflow from the heatink goes UP and through the PSU rather than fighting for air and creating a void and overheating them both. My Dad has one on a QX6700 and it's cool as a cucumber but never overclocks. It will be more efficient than an Intel one but maybe not by enough to warrant spending on it!

    The Xigmatec is ANOTHER GRAVY!!!

It is VAST.. it is MASSIVE. It does a mammoth good job and my mate "saofg" here on Hexus, also known as Bish to hisEve buddies has a Q6600 2.4 running at 3.2 in near silence on that and in testing his cpu went way higher...

So.. Akasa... normal sized and bit beter than Intel...
    Xigmatec.. beast.

But you need LOTS of room for that!

I had to remove side panel fan for my xig. That said, it was quiet and cooled brilliantly. +1 for it.

that's what we had to do too.....

found a new case with a massive size fan and grill.. and took the fan out.

It's SOO quiet that heatsink with as big old slow turning fan.. works a wonder

    Re: Cpu Cooler Choice?

Generally a case with over 190mm width and no side fan over the CPU spot can support 160mm height tower coolers.

The NZXT series generally abide by this rule.

    (I have a NZXT M59 with a Noctua UH-12P)
