I have obviously been getting this wrong for years. The actual way is to smear it not only on top of the core, but all around it. This causes your CPU to be worth many times its actual value.

erm, if that is artic silver already on the chip. it might not work :S . I would think it may have shorted something.

you'd be surprised how much thermal paste people put on their chips.
after working in a maplins tech centre for a while and fixing the great unwashed's pcs people seem to be under the impression that if you get a sachet of paste you have to use the whole bloody thing. No matter how many times you say to them 'just a paper thin layer over the raised square in the middle' it still comes back with it slapped all over like they did it with a trowel.
AFAIK though, too much paste hasnt caused any major damage.
Anyone wanna own up? :)

What is the disadvantage of putting too much paste on as long as its non (electricallly) conductive?
I use Ceramique which is completly non conductive according to Arctic Silver but i presume this is not the case with those TIMs containing silver and other metals? If they were electrically conductive surely it would cause awful problems.

Yeah i realised there should be only a thin layer on the die but i was thinking more about the problem of gettin TIM all over the back of the PGA (surrounding the die) aswell.Quote:
