How do i set up an ADSL network ?

2 X 15metre cat 5e patch cables

i dont need anything else do i ?

ive got a slight problem, i cant seem to connect to the router to change settings , the router i have didnt come with any software, is it needed ? or can i do it all from settings in windows? i havnt a clue where to start so if anyone could help, would be handy ta

I think you'll need to set up the router - for mine, you just type in the IP address of the router and it'll coem up with a setup page. The standard on most is 192.168.0.1 I think.

To check if the router is working, I think you should be able to see other computers on the network since the router acts like a normal hub as well as a modem.

Can you get to any other computers through the network?

i havnt put any other computers on the network yet

im gonna try tomorrow if i get time to sort it all out, but at the moment ive just plugged it into my pc, lights come on, so it does work, just cant connect to it ?

the router should be handing out IP addresses. click start, run, type cmd, then type ipconfig /all

that'll tell you what YOUR pc's IP address is. 192.168.somehting is good, 169.254.somehting is bad. if it's in the GOOD category, there should be a Gateway address listed. type that address into Firefox to get to the router's configuration

my router is 192.168.1.1 to get into it, but i also had some problems at first with this and wish i could remember

Control Panel --> Local Area connection --> Properties --> Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" , click properties, make sure both IP address and dns server are both obtained automatically.

Then reboot the router and it should detect the PC and give it an IP address + you'll be able to access it, I'd hope.

ok this is annoying

done ipconfig and i got the ip 192.168.8.2, and 192.168.8.1 as the gateway

so i connect to both via IE6, and none work, even more annoying is that on networking it shows packets have been recieved, so its wokring ! but it wont let me connect to it

yup and i get a DNS server error, wont connect to it ?

but ipconfig shows its there, and it says 'a net work cable has been unplugged' when i turn it off, so it knows its there ! its even recieved a few packets of data from it but wont load
