Thanks for checking that out. What spec could i put together with the Q8400? Mobo and Ram. Can i get onboard graphics tooif not, cheapest Graphics that would work fine?

You are a wealth of info Cat!!

Would the E8400 be a worthy contender?

I would consider looking at the following bits:

    Intel Q8400 ~ £129

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164520

    Asus P4-P5N9300 barebone~ £132

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159893

    4GB 800MHZ DDR2 ~ £63

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/142403

The total comes to around £324.

The reason I chose the barebone is since it uses the Nvidia 9300 IGP which is similar to the 9400M found in the Mac Mini IIRC.

Here is the Asus web page for the P4-P5N9300 barebone:

that or for cheapness look at some 2nd hand stuff, see if you can pick up a quad core cheap.
a p35 motherboard, e7xxx and a low end gpu (8500gt) may well be worth it 2nd hand.
All depends on the prices you can get stuff for.

The Mac Mini uses a Nvidia chipset so I would probably look at getting a motherboard which has the 9300/730i chipset.

    LaxBlade,

I'm stunned you feel that after a mere 9 posts on the forum, that you have any right what so ever to insult and boss around other members. It is especially galling when you've entered a thread, professed some skill/knowledge, and quite rightly, other members have picked up that your factual basis is somewhat flawed. To then compound it by saying 'thread boring, I'm answering my own question' is less than helpful, and unlikely to win you any friends here.

Freedom of speech? Yes, but even if the European Convention on Human Rights applied here, it is a qualified right subject to a number of derogations that I needn't go into here. However, suffice to say abusive/argumentative posts will be removed, at a moderator or administrators discretion. So, if you would like your posts to be considered fully, and to be welcomed by the community, a little common decency wouldn't go amiss - something that is indeed in the rules.

So, if you would like to rethink the attitude you have towards those with differing options and opinions to yours, and to learn from this post and the infraction you've received from my fellow moderator, PeterB, then we shall have no issues. I sincerely hope that is the case

    Dave

    @ scaryjim

Its kinda nice you have a team of oxymoron's like yourself, to come to you're rescue when you get into trouble....lol - TOT TOT, - I don't really care how many hours you and your pals spend together socialising; every hour god sends in here, on this extremely boring which is obviously full of folks in their Teenage years..... When you're a teenager you think, clown, operate, and behave like a teenager.

On the other hand when your a man, say over 25yrs old; you think, act, analyse, operate and behave like a man. However no man is perfect: however the biggest mistake I've made today was join this pathetic teenage forum, which is run by the likes of you Mr."Scaryjim" someone who is curt, rude, patronizing, pigheaded, and know little regarding the latest intel P55 LGA1156 technology.

I am aware you messaged all your handful of friends to rise-up against me, which is typical of children like you, when they cannot stand up for them selves, YOU Cry "HELP" or I'm gonna tell my daddy on you.!

Then report me to the Moderator, and get all your friends to report me too....

This is the same old thing, that happens around most forums, so most adults real uncomfortable in this type of surroundings:

    1. Because we have more to do with our time, than spend ever hour of the day pretending to solve others problems, like when you're own pathetic PC rig shows your level of relevant personal experience in LGA1156 P55 or X58 LGA1366..... (nothing...lol) or "more around the level of a 4 year old Core 2 Quad" and mobo.

    2. We cannot stand "Walter Mitty's"... you wll have to look that one up in a Dictionary.

    3. We enjoy many other things outside computing and I.T forums, like our own family, for example, which I have a multitude of time outside the internet, who make us happy.

Now I could go on, however your just a kid, your not even on my level, I've said enough, now make sure you're friends get to see the reply I've left you, before you all complain, so I can get booted off this horrible forum - PLEASE.!!!

    Re: i3 system powerful?

Firstly, no report to moderator (as far as I'm aware) was ever made. However, as members and as moderators, we do actually read what is posted.

Furthermore, what on earth makes you think we would ban you for such triviality? Your insults to members are something we want to discourage, but it takes a lot to get yourself permabanned from these forums. That said, if you continue on your current path, it is something I'd consider.

Your arrogance is astounding, 'your (sic) just a kid, your (sic) not even on my level', makes me glad, as tbh, I'd rather have 10 snooty/scaryjims as members, to someone who resorts to trivial personal insults when flaws in their arguments are highlighted.

So, if you are really desperate to leave, please do. I for one won't stop you. However, I will ask that you abide by the forum rules if you do continue to post.

I knew you could run mac OS on a netbook and it apparently increases battery life but never realised there was such a large community.

    Re: i3 system powerful?

Domestic Ginger - Sorry chap, but because of the legally questionable nature of such software, we don't allow it to be linked to from Hexus. Discussion of legality of it (or otherwise) is fine, but links/help & facilitating it isn't.

    Cheers,

You were asked nicely the first time... so

posting the same post in two forums just to have a pop at a member not very clever. Still, only too glad to ablige to your request, so may go and sit on the naughty step for a while.

    Re: i3 system powerful?

    So, back on topic.

The I3 CPU etc looks like a nice buy. Not sure what the onboard graphice would be like but that would be a temporary measure as i said he could have my old GPU Card, 8800 GT. I suppose what niggles me about the CPU is that the GPU is on the chip so to speak. This doesn't take anything away from the CPU itself in the terms of power etc?

    Re: i3 system powerful?

Let's just say, integrated GMA is not good. Although it's a slight boost from the GMA 4500.

This is mobile, rather than desktop, but according to wiki that shouldn't make an appreciable difference.

I'm not aware of it affecting CPU performance though, no.

The onboard graphics of a Core i3 are somewhere between AMD's HD3200 and HD3300 integrated graphics performance. So, good for integrated graphics, but hammered for gaming by any £20 discreet graphics card. If he's not going to be gaming much, though, and is happy with low resolution and image quality (1024X768 low quality settings) it'd be "OK".

In the current i3s the GPU is actually on a seperate bit of silicon, along with the PCIe lanes and the memory controller (essentially this is everything you'd find on the northbridge of a conventional chipset). The two are linked together by a QPI link, which is far faster than a conventional FSB. Essentially, think of an i3 as an enhanced Core 2 Duo with HyperThreading support and an extra fast FSB, linked to a chipset with an enhanced GMA IGP that's roughly equivalent to the HD3200 in AMD's 780G chipset, all bundled up in one package.

What that means in practice is that the memory bandwidth and latency are slightly worse than i5 750 and i7 CPUs (which have the memory controller on the same silicon as the CPU core), but it certainly doesn't adversely impact the processing power of the CPU.
