AMD Athlon II X4 620 with Ninja II Rev. B - overheating

    Hi all,

(Posted on the Scythe forums, but no answer.)

I've just installed an AMD Athlon II X4 620 on an ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO motherboard. I was hoping to run it fanless (aside from the PSU, an Enermax MOD82+), like my last system, in which I used a Ninja.

Getting the Ninja 2 was a struggle. It was extremely difficult to get the clips on to the AM3 retention bracket. I tried adjusting the clips to the middle position but this made the cooler way too loose, so I went back to the original position.

Upon running Prime95 I'm getting SpeedFan temperatures of 70°C+ for Temp1 and Core. The maximum temperature is supposed to be 71°C! This doesn't seem right to me. Obviously it's not a direct comparison but I've passively cooled a Q6600 with a Ninja below this.

I've removed the Ninja and reapplied thermal paste but no joy.

Has anyone else had any experience with the 620? Am I doing something wrong? Is there anything I can try?

I notice that a guy in this thread claims to have an X3 720 with the same PSU running at 55°C - surely this indicates there's something wrong with my setup...

    Thanks,

    Leggie

Where is the PSU mounted? Is it exhausting air from insade the case?

It's mounted above the motherboard in the usual position. Its 12cm fan is underneath it; I don't know whether it's an exhaust fan on an inlet fan. I'll have to check, unless someone happens to know...

EDIT: According to the Enermax website, it looks like an inlet fan.

Just a quick check, the Ninja is not catching on anything in the case or when you put the side on is it? This might make less than perfect seating.

Good thought, but it's not catching on anything as far as I can see.

Try mounting it the other way up?

It's symmetrical; should it make a difference?

Re: AMD Athlon II X4 620 with Ninja II Rev. B - overheating

    Hello,

For the information of the participants on this thread, I also have a similar configuration in a somewhat cramped HTPC case. AMD 620 on Gigabyte GA-MA785g-UD2H. The longest I can go at standard bus speed before reaching 65 degrees on the motherboard sensor while running Prime95 in the default setup (blend, 4 threads - Everest monitoring) is around 5 minutes. The CPU would be approximately 60 degrees by this time. At that point I choose to stop the test. The Silverstone GD04 case has three 120mm fans that run very slowly. It was worse before I added an 80mm exhaust fan in the back plus two 40mm fans (taken from a hard drive cooler) taped with 3M tape on the Northbridge and the Southbridge of my MA-GA785G-UD2H. I have ordered a Scythe Super Shuriken, another 80mm exhaust fan and an Antec Spot Cooler. I will post again regarding any improvement.
