    Re: Windows Experience Index

If money is no object then some kind of SSD hard drive would certainly sort that out.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/80GB-...s-Write-70MB-s

Or perhaps a WD Raptor running at 10k rpm - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/150-G...-rpm-42-ms-NCQ

Im sure someone else will come up with a better solution though.

Flash memory. Seriously. You won't get above 5.9 with a mechanical drive, AFAIK. If you want better, lay out £200 on an SSD as system drive.

OK, I suppose you could try a 3 or 4 disk RAID 0. Dunno how much better it'd be though.

Yeah - mechanical drives just don't cut the mustard any more. I get a 7.7 rating for my hard disk with a Intel X25 G2 160 GB drive. Awesome.

    Re: Windows Experience Index

SDDs are definately the way forward, but I'll have to live with what I've got, til the prices come down a bit!
Is WEI the best overall benchmark or are there others I should look at?

    Re: Windows Experience Index

To be honest, imo the only benchmark you need if you're not going to do some hardcore overclocking is does it do what you want how you want? Does it play games at the framerate that's good? etc. If the answer is yes, then it's good to go

I think I got 6.1 or 6.5 with my hard drive array. 3 x 500gb in raid 0 so you can get there. I had the hard drives spare and a raid controller on the motherboard so this method was a lot cheaper than buying a ssd and it is slower but it suits me for the moment.

    Re: Windows Experience Index

I have 2 40gb ssd now kingston drives in raid 0 which have a score of 7.5 if its of any interest.

Personally I love the SSD drives and they make a huge difference to the computer.

I have the same 2 SSds in raid, but I get score of 7.9 does the score decline over time? or is this raid driver/chipset differences at play?

    Re: Windows Experience Index

Apparently the score declines because Microsoft raises the bar every so often.

For me, that makes it a pointless benchmark, but there you go.

    Re: Windows Experience Index

I always thought the score stayed the same but it was only valid on that version of Windows; certainly my scores on Vista never changed (or only improved with an upgrade).

Incidentally, just built a monstor PC for a client:

    i7 920
    12GB DDR3 1600
    GTX 285
    2x 160GB Intel SSD RAID0
    2x WD 1TB RAID0

    Processor: 7.4
    Memory: 7.5
    Graphics: 7.3
    Gaming Graphics: 7.3
    Primary Disk: 7.9

    Windows 7 Professional x64

IMHO, in a years time, when your benchmark is still the same and you haven't upgraded anything......
Surely it's better that 7.9 is always the best score and the one to measure your system against?

I'm getting 5.9 as well with 2x Samsung F3 500gb in RAID 0. The only way to get in the 7.0's is with an SSD due to the access time.
