which is better for running windows 7 in
i want to know weather running win 7 on a 10,000rpm hard drive like a 36 raptor or running on a ssd drive was better.
if ssd drives are better which is the best on the market for cost ratio
also im not looking purely for speed also reliability durability and warranty thanks
Re: which is better for running windows 7 in
For speed, reliability, durability, you want an SSD. Take a look at Intel's offerings, you've got top performers at a reasonable price at 40GB and 80GB with them, more if you wanted - eg this thread http://forums.hexus.net/current-barg...0gb-165-a.html
As for 10k RPM hard drives, a 36GB or 74GB Raptor is a massive waste of money - they're fairly easily outperformed by standard 7200rpm drives these days. You'd want to be looking at a 150GB or 300GB Velociraptor instead, but even then I wouldn't bother - the speed improvement over standard hard drives just isn't big enough in my eyes to warrant the additional cost.

Completely agree, it's no contest between a SSD v.s. any mechanical drive.
+1 for intels, they've demonstrated the most consistent good performance results to date.
Re: which is better for running windows 7 in
Intel are the way to go, but they come at a hefty price though. Be warned ;)
Re: which is better for running windows 7 in
thank you guys very brilliant info and good link lol sorry new at this and was building a new pc.
i also want to ask if ocz corsair or even kingstons ssd drives where worth having a look at, i would go with intel but trying to save just a little bit of cash

I would go with OCZ SSDs :rockon2:
Re: which is better for running windows 7 in
How about Samsung SSDs? I have a 64GB one, and it works well - altough there hasn't been any firmware updates for it, and so it doesn't support TRIM. I'm planning on RAID0-ing two of them together for my next build ....

Re: which is better for running windows 7 in
Runs maintenance on the drives to make sure they won't lose performance over time. Not all drives come with it.
Kingston's new drives at the moment are rebranded Intel by the way.
Re: which is better for running windows 7 in
TRIM is a set of commands in Windows 7 that actively manages the storage blocks in the drive to ensure that performance doersn't drop over its lifetime. For a more detailed explanation google the article over at Anandtech.
Which SSD depends on your budget. Generally the larger they are, the faster they are due to the way the data is written to the blocks.
Loadsamoney = Intel
Somemoney = OCZ (new ones out soon)
Littlemoney = Kingston VNow 40Gb (Half an Intel)
Be careful with the Kingston. You do not want the 64Gb as it has an obsolete controller. Google some reviews and have a look
Re: which is better for running windows 7 in
thank you guys very helpful it sounds like i might go for the ocz by the way i just wanted to use it for my operating system and everything else (except for priority exe files) on a 1t hard drive wd green would that be a good way of doing it and if so for the operating system what size ssd drive to go for to get the best out of win7
Re: which is better for running windows 7 in
Up to you really. You could get Windows onto a 30GB disk if you wanted.
If you take the pagefile off onto a different drive, then you'll have a bit more space, and you could maybe put a few core applications onto the system drive, and shift the others onto the WD.
It all depends what you want to speed up - if you want to speed up windows, you put your system on it. If it's a specific application, then use that, or if it's video files... you get the picture.
Personally, I'm waiting until I can get an SSD large enough to act as my sole disk - probably 160GB.
Re: which is better for running windows 7 in
wow wont that be way too expensive i think it might be a while befor the prices go down but listening to your advice i may now go for an 80ssd as want windows and important exe files to run smoothly
Re: which is better for running windows 7 in
Yeah, that's why I'm waiting :p
Re: which is better for running windows 7 in
lol more patient than me lol
