That falling ball thing was one of the software workshop tasks I did in my MSc!! Physics engine my rear end

Looks good - I'm very interested in that display. My HTC Magic can cope very well with minimal backlight, but it still needs some level of backlight to be readable - how the devil does that one work?

Give it a pen and handwriting recognition, and make it ~ £300, then I'll buy one

I've been reading about this new display for some time - unlike Apple's effort this truly could be a cross-genre display offering the best of both worlds. http://www.pixelqi.com/

    Looks interesting.

Why does the screen sometimes go black and completely re-draw, like other e-readers, and sometime has fluid animations like a normal LCD?

I'd guess that's part of the transition between backlit LCD mode and reflective LCD mode. It's a very clever idea, but being LCD based I'd guess it's not going to be a long term solution, as the colour mode still needs a backlight. But it has got me thinging about how many applications I use actually need colour, and how many I'd could cope with using the black & white mode for to save battery...

Ok, I guess that is explained in the video (which i only watched bits of with no sound) or the article, which I didn't bother reading

That's true actually. Having a screen like that with two modes and effectively two 'skins' on a phone would be good. you don't really need a full colour screen on your mobile all the time do you?

I actually got most information from one of the articles linked to from their own press page: it's from an ezine called POPSCI, so it might be worth taking with a small pinch of salt, but it's well written... linky. It also mentions some of the upcoming competing technologies (reflective colour screens using little coloured mirrors* sounds kind of interesting too ) that we should be seeing in notebooks & tablets in the next couple of years. If all these technologies can make it to market over the next 18 - 24 months it could be a very interesting time for portable computing - and that's not even considering the potential of oled...

*EDIT: from the article linked above, about Qualcomm's new reflective colour display:

Made by Qualcomm, the Mirasol display creates pixels with tiny moving metal pieces, just a few micro-meters across, that move up and down to reflect light of different wavelengths and colors.
See, that just sounds utterly cool

The more I look at these things, the more I'm liking them. Bu I suppose that's the lust for new shiny kit. Still, it's all going to be about price & functionality that's going to sort the major players in this emerging marketplace. I can see my kids wanting one.. each

There are indeed some great advances in screen tech.

I meant to post this for Zak the other day because of his gushing over the iPhone/Touch screen

That is believed to be Samsungs firsts 'Bada' handset vs. an iPhone.
