New build £1400 i7 Gaming Pc
Hi,
I have been getting some good advice on a new gaming build on a different forum, but thought I would join this one as it isn't limited to advice based on one shops stock.
I am looking to put together a new build for gaming etc. I do plan to overclock although not too aggressively. I want the option of crossfire in the future but don't plan on it initially. I would like it to be quiet (but without going crazy). My current plan is as follows:
Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 5870 "Dirt 2 Edition" 1024MB £319.99
Crucial M225 128GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive (CT128M225) £282.99
(I already have the 5870 and SSD)
Asus P6X58D Premium Intel X58 (Socket 1366) Motherboard £249.99
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - OEM £203.99
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel (TR3X6G1600C9) £119.98
Corsair HX 750W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply £117.99
Fractal Design Define R2 Midi Tower Case - Black Pearl £79.99
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £64.99
Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler (Socket 775/1156/1366) £46.99
Sony Optiarc AD-7241S 24x DVD±RW SATA Lightscribe Optical Drive (Black) £18.99
2 x Sharkoon Silent Eagle 1000 120mm Fan - 3/4 Pin £20.42
2 x GT 1450 Fans (for the megahalem)
Asus Xonar DX 7.1 PCI-Express Sound Card £57.99
My biggest worries are:
- The motherboard. I was thinking about the Rampage and then the P6TD but think this one gives me an element of future proofing (if that is ever possible!)
- I can't make up my mind regarding the megahalem vs a Corsair H50. I want which ever is quietest but can still cool a 4ghz overclock.
- The case, I currently have is an Antec P180 and whilst it is great, the reviews of the R2 seems pretty good.
Any advice greatfully received. (And apologies if you have already seen this post on the other forum!)

Low end water and highend air is always going to be a close battle.
Not sure how scientific the test is but Megahelm v.s. H50 and it's close:

Personally, I'd probably go with the Megahalem with results so close I'd go with the one where there's less that can go wrong.

Thanks mike, that's a useful post. I think I am going to go for the Mega.
Does anybody have any comments on the build?
