    Effect of putting unsupported processor in Mobo?

    I have an old P3 'board with a lowly 500mhz P3 processor. I'm struggling to find any documentation for the board so wondered whether I would harm the board if I just tried plugging in a 1ghz P3 processor? Given they're only a few quid I'm happy to have it blow up but I don't really want to damage the 'board. Any thoughts?

    The worse that will probably happen is the CPU won't run at full speed or the machine will fail to start or crash.

    Unlikely to damage mobo (or processor) worst case is that it wont work at all. Worth a punt.

    ive done it...but i had a board with a 600mhz cpu in it, i got a 1.2ghz cpu to work in it i cant see it not working...

    Intel Burn Test produces the most heat out of any stress-test program I know. I get about 20 degrees hotter than prime!

    UPDATE : Quite dull really, no fire, no bang, just didn't do anything, not even a POST, didn't even get warm. FSB speed too high for board.

    It was never going to make the board explode - the 1GHz CPUs actually have a TDP that is *lower* than the original 500MHz PIIIs. The chips went from 0.25micron 512KB half speed L2 cache to 0.18 micron 256KB 'advanced transfer cache' full speed L2 cache.

    I'm not surprised the FSB is too high though - the 100FSB PIII chips were quite rare. I still have one (sold the other on ebay) and ran a dual 1GHz system with 2GB RAM (or was it 1GB?) for years. The 440GX chipset was pretty fabby - supported everything from ancient PII systems all the way up to 1GHz P3s. The SECC2 processor cartridge was a bit nasty though.
