Skt 775 questions

Hey people,

I've been out of the PC loop for a while and was wondering if Socket 775 is still having CPU's produced for it?

Reason I ask is I'm looking at upgrading one of my PC's - unfortunately all but one are either Skt A or Skt 478 CPU's - the only one I can see being worth while is a Skt 775 3.4ghz system.

My plan was to buy a motherboard and memory combo then when more funds were to hadn buy a better CPU.

Would this be worth while?

s775 is still viable but I personally would not bother.

Either go AM3 (AMD) or 1156 (Intel)

I'd echo shaithis, particularly if you're thinking about not getting the CPU straight away. Intel won't be releasing anything new on s775 so the longer you wait the less likely it is that you'll get a good CPU. Sell all the old stuff as bundles on ebay (for mobo + CPU + RAM you can normally get something like £20) and stack it all up for a brand spanking new buy of everything

A 3.4ghz c2d is still pretty quick. Though if you do want to get a new mobo and ram might as well do what shaithis says and go am3 or 1156.

Main reason for upgrading was to get more memory as the motherboard I have now is DDR and DDR2/3 is alot cheaper.

The CPU is the older 3.4ghz non dual core (i think - been a while....)

3.4GHz single-core s775......sounds like the leaf-blowing Pentium to me.....which probably means your motherboard will not accept the old Core2 CPUs, let alone the newer 45nm variants.

Any idea what motherboard it is?

Yeah it's an EQS M55P9-MLF however I think EQS have gone bump as their site hasn't been up for some time.

i945 based.....some could run Core2 with a BIOS update....but I wouldn't hold your breath, especially considering the manufacturer....I actually didn't even know there was a PC hardware manufacturer called EQS!!

It's Radeon® Xpress 200 based not Intel. TBH I think I would be flogging a dead horse with that board.

A 3.4GHz c2d would be very quick indeed, but I don't think they ever made one at that speed! The ultra-nippy E8600 is 3.33GHz. A 3.4GHz CPU on s775 is going to be a Netburst Pentium 4. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone...

Interestingly, here's a Hexus review that includes your motherboard, - it doesn't look too grand for it though, as it falls behind the Intel based motherboards on offer by a considerable margin.

The Intel motherboards are running a 3.6GHz P4, pitted against a 2.4GHz Athlon 64. However, in the single thread processor test (Hexus PiFast) the 2.4GHz Athlon hammers the Pentiums. I'm afraid that the old Pentiums were slow, and it's really not worth keeping hold of - even a £25 Sempron 140 would outperform it nowadays...

Thanks for the replies. I know the board ins't that good. It is used as a media PC but was the only CPU that motherboards are still availible for.
