Re: PATA to SATA Converter
If it's a notebook drive, then no. 2.5" IDE drives use a 44pin connector that carries the power as well as the data signal, and that Maplin connector looks to be a standard desktop 40pin IDE connector.
I'd strongly recommend getting a USB -> IDE / SATA convertor, as this will be much more flexible in the future. Here's a few options:
Plexus Adapter
Startech Adapter
Maplin do a similar device but @ more than 2x the cost! Scan don't seem to have anything quite the same sadly.

What you want is one of these;

Dont quote me its worth double checking on the scan care forums, but im sure mine came with a 44Pin 2.5" PATA to 40 pin adapter!
Should be in every computer nerds toolbox!

I've tried a couple of PATA to SATA converters off dealextreme and they didnt work
I would go with the USB to PATA suggestion

I take it your laptop hard disc lookis like this

That's a 2.5" PATA it's 42pin you cannot directly plug it into a motherboard IDE port via a ribon cable, however you can get an adaptor to plug it in.

I actually have that exact one at work which I use to recover data off laptop hard drives, you plug it into the hard drive then connect up a IDE ribon cable to the motherboard and plug in the molex.
Here we go still the same basic thing but £2.50 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-5-Laptop-to-...item20ade839af
I think what you are originally asking for is a SATA to PATA adaptor, not the other way around.
However I don't know of any 2.5" pata hard drive to sata adaptors, only pata to usb or normal motherboard IDE socket to sata socket adaptors.

definately, the USB-PATA converters are ideal as they allow you to hotplug, never had a problem with the one I bought on ebay for about 2 quid.
