a certain type of device?
Hello everyone,
I wonder if you all could help me?
I will be travelling around spain next month with a HD camcorder and an audio field recorder, both of these devices use SDHC cards. I really dont want to drag my laptop around too to transfer said cards when they are full. I've looked into portable hard drives with card readers and I'm not too impressed with their capacity and price (HD video munches a gig in no time and HQ audio is not far behind). I was wondering..I have a samsung story 1.5tb, it has its own power supply so no need to run it off a laptop etc..is there a device that will let me plug an SD card reader right into the samsung USB port and simply transfer the files over, I guess a simple LCD display of whats happening would be handy, is there such a device?
Thankyou :)
Re: a certain type of device?
I remember seeing external 2.5'' hdd enclosures with a LCD and card reader slots that would auto transfer a memory card contents to the hdd but that was a few years ago.... I tried to find something like it on ebay and could only come up with this result:

Transfer and store your photos directly onto the SmartDisk PhotoBank PB40 Digital Photo Bank and instantly free up space on your flash memory card!
UPDATE: Found another one on ebay but it's a UK seller:

Re: a certain type of device?
Thankyou very much :)
That could possibly be what I'm looking for?
Seems I can use that device plugged into an external drive via USB and monitor when it has finished?
I'm also in the U.K so no probs with adapters and delivery etc.
edit: Actually thinking about it I could purchase a 250GB 2.5" int drive from scan for £35 and put it into that device!! excellent.
Re: a certain type of device?
no probs!
I noticed that the first ebay link's seller was in the US? so that's why I searched again and found the 2nd ebay link which was a UK seller.... abit easier and quicker to get the goods that way! :)
Re: a certain type of device?
have you seen this device on Scan: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Thecu...and-AA-Battery
Takes AA batteries which may be useful when travelling, slap the same 2.5" IDE drive and you found earlier, and then connect your Camera and Sounds recorder over USB and hit the back up button.
Re: a certain type of device?
excellent circuitmonkey!! Exactly what I'm looking for!! and its with scan too so I can grab a HD while I'm ordering that.

Glad I could help, this is the same one that my friends used on their round the world year off and it served them well.
Re: a certain type of device?
Hurrah!! Just got my Thecus Nano Yes and a 250GB hard drive......
BOOOO!!! it doesnt seem to work :help:
I'm getting the old 'flashing err' problem.
Got it up and running as an external usb storage drive on my PC..its online, allocated, has a drive letter etc.
Getting it to work as an OTG device is just not happening at all.
Tried my canon legria, recognised that it was plugged into something..pressed copy on the nano (in copy mode)= flashing 'err'
Tried my zoom h4n, that too did its usb mode stuff...error again by the nano
Tried a card reader, error again
Tried my mp3 player (sansa clip), was usb connected to the nano...error again.
So basically its just another external drive (I already have 3 of those) at the moment which is not what I bought it for at all.
I have checked the drive itself in my PC..its working fine.
Any help would be very much appreciated as I'm going away fairly soon and would like to have not blown £90 of my budget on something useless to me.
thanks.
Re: a certain type of device?
you format the drive as fat32?
as it turns out hexus has it's own Thecus Case section:

Re: a certain type of device?
thanks again circuitmonkey...
yep made sure the drive is FAT32.
Already been through all the hexus threads and have come across some others that had the same problems but no solutions seem to have been given?
The 'manual' for want of a better word suggests that if the error LED is flashing I need to check up??
Check up what? my health at the doctors?
The only other possible use I have for this drive without the OTG function is a rather expensive MP3 portable charger but even then I'll have to buy batteries to do it.
Re: a certain type of device?
have you tried it with a SD card reader?
Re: a certain type of device?
There was the odd pda back in the day that could act as a USB host - combine with a usb hub, card reader and your external harddisk and you might be away. I hate to think what the transfer speeds would be like, and I'd be slightly dubious about SDHC... all in all how about a netbook?
Re: a certain type of device?
@ circuitmonkey...yep tried a card reader, no joy. It has been returned along with the drive anyway now.
@ jimbouk...yeah the transfer rate would be shocking, I cant imagine how long a transfer of 15gb of HD video would take!!
A netbook kind of defeats the purpose I'm afraid, too expensive and I might as well take my laptop if I'm going to go down that route.
I am amazed that a company hasn't cornered the market on a device that is reliable and has the capacity to accept large 2.5 drives?
My quest will continue.
