    Core i7 920 build Vs Core i5 750 build

    Hey :3.

I wonder... is the Core i7 worth the price premium over Core i5? In the 2 builds I did, the premium came to £161.23. For instance.. about how much performance difference there is between these 2 parts at stock and overclocked? in percentage terms would help.. assume both are with quality ram and motherboards. From what I can tell the LGA 1156 socket is future proof with sandy bridge next year, so no concern there.

    Prices from ebuyer.com:

    Core i5 750 £150.69inc vat
    Core i7 920 D0 £213.64inc. vat
ASUS P6T iX58 Socket 1366 mboard # £172.89inc. vat (personally very over the top expensive for a motherboard... I found some as low as £135 but I wasn't satisfied with the reviews. )
Intel TOM COVE DH55TC H55 Socket 1156 VGA DVI HDMI Out 8 Channel Audio MATX Motherboard * £74.61inc. vat (I only need the basics.. would go for a £100 asus board if it meant an obvious performance/OC gain)

Anything and everything really, from what I could tell the other day there's less than 5% difference in frame rates in the latest games... and... at least for this purpose the i7 920 is definitely not worth the extra cost... at least for me anyway.

I usually have everything left open always.. photoshop, Visual studio, dreamweaver, word proc, firefox, winamp, video, yada yada... a full 3d game.. would be interested to know how big of a deal hyperthreading is... the i5 750 lacks it.. which is annoying, perhaps the midrange sandy bridges next year will have it.

What pricing do you get for an i7-860 build ?
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Ah.. something else for me to look at £72 more than the i5 build, just the chip that's different.

That £72 gives you the hyperthreading, and performance that in some cases can exceed both.
The sweet spot in terms of all round performance ?

Definitely agree.. actually faster than a Core i7 920 at stock speeds.
