...is the problem here?

Recently my rig has started to do these 2 things:

The fans on my GTX 275 spin up as usual but then slow right down after 2 seconds of being switched on.

My monitor is ureponsive.

What I have to do now to get it working is to switch the system off, un plug everything, wait for 5 mins then try again and it usually works.

So what do you guys reckon is the fault here? Really hope it's not the PSU (though I suspect it is) as its a Dark Power Pro and I'd have to send it to Germany for a replacement.

Any help is appreciated (though I will be trying to troubleshoot the problem in the mean time)

When you say your monitor is unresponsive, can you be a bit more specific.. what are the symptoms?

How do your GPU fans act when you're doing something like playing graphic intensive games?

Sorry should have mentioned. It's on and working it's just not receiving a signal.

On startup the fans on the card usually go full pelt for about 8 seconds then normalise after a bit. This is normal for cards like these apparently.

When I'm playing a game it's a bit louder but not to the point where it triggers alarm bells. i.e. no clicking sounds or anything strange.

Why do you suspect the PSU rather than the graphics card?

It's normal for the fans on the graphics card to to spin up to full RPM on start up. When I'm having the aforementioned issue the fans only spin up for 2 seconds then normalise, then I get no signal from the monitor.

I then hear a few clicking sounds thereafter but it's bit harder to ascertain where they're coming from.

I know it's on the lower end on the system where my PSU, HDD and card are.

I've reseated the RAM and the PCI-E cables. I've also stuck my new HDD in there so I'm pretty sure the problem lies in either the PSU or Gcard.

I just had a check and I can return the PSU free of charge as its still in warranty but I just want to be sure.

Easy to check if you can swap in an old GPU and see if it still does it.

My 275 GTX (ASUS) spins up for a weird amount of time, like 10s of 100% fan. I have tried adjusting my voltages, as I thought it may be the motherboard or whatever. It just works after 10s, and I'm living with this issue and having my PC in sleep so it starts instantly. I looked into changing firmware, etc.

Does yours do the same if yo just leave?

I would have done that instantly if I hadn't sold most of my spare kit due to needing the extra funds at the time. I'll see if I can get a hold of one though.

Mine does the exact same thing. I haven't tried fiddling with settings or anything as I've heard it's just something these high-end cards do (mid-range now). I was coming from a 4830 so it was new to me.

I really hope I'm not being thick and it's some power save feature that I'm not aware of.

Anyone have an Asus P6T SE or any recent Asus board?

Test the PSU rails with ideally a multimetre if you have one, this is easy for 2 rails but the 3rd rail requires the PSU to have an Aux connector which some don't but you can test this rail via the ATX connector on mobo though.

Other than that use Speedfan in Windows to test voltages and see if they are within tollerance.

Even this very old nVidia 7800GTX fan spins fast when powered on for 2 seconds or so then it goes to a normal RPM.

What's even stranger, is on a pretty old motherboard the 275 I had span for less, 50% less. lol
