    Basic keyboard needed

I'm after a basic keyboard, nothing fancy but not something which isn't going to break within a month or have keys sticking etc. Maybe a Microsoft keyboard? Any recommendations?
    Thanks

i agree, we have these at my school, and though they wont stand up to a determined idiot who has no concept of school spending cuts, they do function if used respectfully. the keys are nicely separated and there is none of this ergonomics gone mad and having a stupid curve in the keyboard. Also they do stand up to most knocks and bumps, ie small drops and dropping a heavy pencil case on it. the wire is ok, being 1-1.5m, and the tilt is good as well with the flip feet going to about 1-1.5 cm high.

plus its got holes to drain away spills

    Re: Basic keyboard needed

Yeah it's not a super-budget keyboard I'm after or anything I don't mind spending a bit but these new 'wave', 'ergonomic' and 'curve' keyboards just seem to be a pain to type on, don't seem any more comfortable and make it harder for you to use a standard keyboard somewhere else once you get used to them but that's pretty much all there is at the higher end. Also I don't want a wireless keyboard because my keyboard stays in the same place, they can suffer from interference, they have batteries to change and I don't think most have any form of encryption so if a neighbour happened to have a compatible receiver and are within the fairly limited range they could see everything you type. I've had a quick look at the suggested Logitech and MS keyboards and it looks like there are upgraded versions, the 350 and 600 respectively - are they still good? Like I say I don't mind paying a bit if it's for a good quality keyboard.

    Re: Basic keyboard needed

The 350 is basically the same as the 250 but has the addition of "media" keys, ie volume +/-, play, stop and keys to open your internet browser and email and such.

I would also look at the Cherry keyboards, they tend to be very well built, if a bit more expensive. (cherry mainly do indstrial & specialised keyboards)
That's the basic one cherry do.
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Cherr...SB-11-20-Black

I would also half consider the HP keyboard, (typeing this on one) I do rate the logitech 250 over it as the space bar on the hp keyboard is a little wobbly.
The reason I swaped my 250 for the HP is that my desk has a draw with a stright stop block/wrist rest the front of the keyboard rests against and the curved front of the 250 was causing me issues

What are Cherry keyboards like to type on? I've tried Logitech and MS keyboards and they feel OK but I've never tried a Cherry one. Do they have a cheap plasticy feel or a more quality feel like the others?

    Re: Basic keyboard needed

Cherry Keyboards are very responsive in my experience. Had a wireless cherry keyboard that I used for mediapc duties, had a nice clunk to every key stroke, the range was far better than anything I've used prior or since and was nigh on indestructable. Dropped, spilt on, sat on and still worked fine. Still have it, only reason I don't use it any more is because it's beige and I wanted a keyboard/trackpad all in one. Was only £20odd too. If the wireless are that well built I'd imagine the corded are even better.

    Re: Basic keyboard needed

I really like these bog standard HP ones - the DT528AT

All depends what you're looking for - these have a very soft and quiet key press which appeals to me, it just feels so smooth to use. I bought a load recently for work, to replace a load of really ancient keyboards, very happy with them so far.

    Re: Basic keyboard needed

Haven't really noticed it to be honest, but fair enough.

The main benefit I've enjoyed is that with 20-odd keyboards in the room (which doubles as my office), it used to sound like a machine-gun during heavy typing sessions, whereas it's now much more serene.

    Re: Basic keyboard needed

I have this keyboard, the keys are pretty much flat and it is so easy to type on as well as having back lit keys, either red or blue depending on what you set. It doesn't have the buttom to do the "dissapointed" smiley on msn though, that straight line up one which is normally to the right of the left hand shift button left of "Z" key.

It can be had for about £20 iirc but it is worth the price easily.

Oh yeah, would be helpful if I posted a link, lol.
