Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Seeing as the main focus is a lan gaming box i figured i would see if a HD5850 would fit + work. After a bit of research it seems it will fit "just" but that + an 860 is probably bad news. Solution? i5 dual core i reckon.

Add the OCZ platinum RAM at about £85
Edit - and a slot loading DVD Drive (just ofr the cool factor)
Just to reiterate its main function is a lan gaming box so a dual core would probably be just as if not more appropriate for most games.
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Should be an awesome build!
you should really put up a build log!
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
I would take the i5 750 over the 650. Not convinced by the dual hyperthreader. Can you shave a few quid with an OEM model?
The PSU has two rails of 14A and 16A. As stated in the techpowerup review I would interested to see if it runs from one connector as it has max draw of 150W. May be prudent to keep the card on its own rail as if it ends up sharing the 14A there may be a few problems.
Looks like a good build to me; wish I could have one......
Taking Scansure?
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Power draw is the issue here which is why im opting for the dual instead of the quad. The chipset, hard drives and RAM are all pretty low on power draw so there should be no issues with sharing the other rail.
And yes i will be advising him to take scansure. Its a pretty good thing to do when your ordering a full set of kit for a build IMO.

And HD5850 has power consumption only slightly higher than that of a GTS250 or HD4850:

I would consider undervolting the Core i5 750.
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Hey guys, im the friend in the OP.
I asked Biscuit to build me a rig that i could use only for LAN's (My System thing has what i use at home...the swordm being the primary reason for not even considering taking it) as im from another country and need something very small to bring to the i-series.
Do you guys think it will overheat oooor?

I have just thought about a different suggestion for the system.
I would look at the following system:
Shuttle SX48P2E Barebone ~ £282
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145419
4GB 800MHZ DDR2 ~ £70
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166785
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 ~ £174
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141515
Samsung F3 500GB ~ £38
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146252
Intel 80GB SSD ~ £183
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/196519
Mounting adaptor for SSD ~ £6 to £7
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124145
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149580
SATA DVD rewriter ~ £15
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145450
The OP should temporarily assign one of their GTX280 graphics cards to the SFF when at the LAN.
The total comes to around £768 to £769 pounds.
The Q9550 is far better than a Core i5 661 for gaming:

I would also look at this thread and the signature of the last poster:
http://www.sudhian.com/index.php?/fo...thread/103931/
I have one of the earlier P2 Shuttles and with the PF60 bag it is very easy to carry around.

Hey Man,
You dont need to worry about overheating. The GPU will have a direct vent to pull cool air from the outside, the CPU will have a MASSIVE fan ontop of it which will also keep the ram and the other mobo componants cool and there is a 120mm fan pushing cool air from the outside into the case making sure the warm air isnt just trapped and being recycled.
Im just a little uneasy about having an i series quad AND a HD5850 in there running off the be quiet, even if it was undervolted it would still draw a fair bit o power
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Its up to PiXxX i guess but my preference would still be the i5 SG05. Although not much, gives him some room to upgrade wheras the 775 system is what it is end of story.
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
There is also the 82W TDP Core i7 860S:

It is not very cheap though.

frostytech.com suggests that a Zalman 8700 will whoop the scythe's arse when it comes to low profile cooling and their website suggest support for skt 1156, although an additional adapter might be necessary.

By low-profile do you mean quiet?
If thats the case, then since this is purely a LAN machine, then quiet is not an issue at all.
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
I think that cooling is one of the most important priorities with an SFF PC IMHO!

Low profile means it is smaller than regular coolers. Agreed cooling is important which is why i have stuck a better fan in the front. Could always put something even more powerful in there, think the noctuA 140 fan on 120 mounts would fit?

I mean, by frostytech.com's charts it suggest that the zalman will keep a CPU with a TDP of 150W 11.4c cooler then the scythe albeit running slightly noisier, but come one, when your gaming noise isn't a major concern
