Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...r/Untitled.png
A friend on mine has £1200 to spend (give or take) for a mini-ITX system build, maybe a uATX if this thing is gunna tug on the power requirements a bit.
What do we think, will the power supply handle it? anything you would change?
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
As per the MSI 5770 HAWK review, the test system pulled 232W at full load, so you should be OK on a 300W PSU.
Were budget vaguely an issue I might consider an i5 750 as an alternative, but I guess with a £1200 budget there's not a lot you could spend the savings on! Otherwise it looks like a mighty good build...

So is that another +1 for power supply is safe? He wants to order it tomorrow so im kinda pressed for time.:juggle:

Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Just had a thought... will that restrict the GPU size at all?
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
This post suggests you could fit a 5850 in that case,
will push the price of the build to the top end of the budget though
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
I'd maybe consider using the remainder of that budget to put the 1TB HDD out of the case (either as a NAS or an external drive. A 3.5" HDD really blocks airflow from the front fan in that case. It's not a problem at this time of the year, but last summer on hot days my system would overheat any time I tried to game. I wound up replacing the hard drive with a laptop drive, solving the problem.
If you have any questions that I can help you with about the SG05 then let me know :) I hope you'll keep us up to date with the build too, it's quite a system to jam in a mITX!

Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Im wondering if a H50 coolers extra thickness due to the radiator will mean that it will take up some of the space that would otherwise have the end of the GPU + 6 pin power or if the GPU rests nicely against it?
Some images as examples

Thanks for the tip, maybe if i used the 3.5 drive cage with an adaptor i could stick the SSD In there and then put a laptop drive in the 2.5 inch slot, might not block it so much?
Also i might get him this ram instead... no point wasting £30 extra on the corsair

http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/539/sug052.jpg
nope, the card misses the fan, as shown hyarr
the chunky pipe connecting bit is only on one side of the radiator, and im not sure why the person in the photo have put it in that way rather than 180degrees so its out of the way, because the other side sticks out no more than the fan
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
hmmm on this pic it looks like there is an extrusion on both sides
http://www.johntrott.com/h50.JPG
I could maybe mount it at 90 degrees to what the other dude had?
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Yes and it might get in the way of the video card, or the pci-e connector to be exact, this is where an nvidia card with it's side mounted connector would be handy.
Shame there's no real decent ones about.
You could try for a cheap gtx 275 or 4890 but that will push up the power demand.
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
i think il play it safe and stick with air cooling :)

Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
I would check some of the SG05 builds in the last few pages of this thread over at OcUK:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...247892&page=12
You can always fit a better PSU and I would look at the be quiet! 350w SFX Power:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?W...source=froogle
Here is a review for the PSU:
http://www.overclock 3d.net/reviews/power_supply/be_quiet_350w_sfx_power_psu/1
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
doesnt that require a bit of modding?
Edit - found the answer to my own question (i think).
assuming the FSP unit used in the silverstone is one of these, I should be ok as the Be Quiet dimensions are 125 x 100 x 63,5 mm (according to scan).
Not really sure what else this opens up the door for though as the HD5770 is probably the best performing card you can physically fit in there. It does give me a good peace of mind though.
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Seeing as the main focus is a lan gaming box i figured i would see if a HD5850 would fit + work. After a bit of research it seems it will fit "just" but that + an 860 is probably bad news. Solution? i5 dual core i reckon.
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...26at084551.png
Add the OCZ platinum RAM at about £85
Edit - and a slot loading DVD Drive (just ofr the cool factor)
Just to reiterate its main function is a lan gaming box so a dual core would probably be just as if not more appropriate for most games.
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Should be an awesome build!
you should really put up a build log!
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
I would take the i5 750 over the 650. Not convinced by the dual hyperthreader. Can you shave a few quid with an OEM model?
The PSU has two rails of 14A and 16A. As stated in the techpowerup review I would interested to see if it runs from one connector as it has max draw of 150W. May be prudent to keep the card on its own rail as if it ends up sharing the 14A there may be a few problems.
Looks like a good build to me; wish I could have one......
Taking Scansure?
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Power draw is the issue here which is why im opting for the dual instead of the quad. The chipset, hard drives and RAM are all pretty low on power draw so there should be no issues with sharing the other rail.
And yes i will be advising him to take scansure. Its a pretty good thing to do when your ordering a full set of kit for a build IMO.

And HD5850 has power consumption only slightly higher than that of a GTS250 or HD4850:

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3650&p=13
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/gra...-5850-review/9
I would consider undervolting the Core i5 750.

Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Hey guys, im the friend in the OP.
I asked Biscuit to build me a rig that i could use only for LAN's (My System thing has what i use at home...the swordm being the primary reason for not even considering taking it) as im from another country and need something very small to bring to the i-series.
Do you guys think it will overheat oooor?

I have just thought about a different suggestion for the system.
I would look at the following system:
Shuttle SX48P2E Barebone ~ £282
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145419
4GB 800MHZ DDR2 ~ £70
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166785
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 ~ £174
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141515
Samsung F3 500GB ~ £38
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146252
Intel 80GB SSD ~ £183
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/196519
Mounting adaptor for SSD ~ £6 to £7
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124145
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149580
SATA DVD rewriter ~ £15
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145450
The OP should temporarily assign one of their GTX280 graphics cards to the SFF when at the LAN.
The total comes to around £768 to £769 pounds.
The Q9550 is far better than a Core i5 661 for gaming:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/defau...=50&p2=117&c=1
I would also look at this thread and the signature of the last poster:
http://www.sudhian.com/index.php?/fo...thread/103931/
I have one of the earlier P2 Shuttles and with the PF60 bag it is very easy to carry around.

Hey Man,
You dont need to worry about overheating. The GPU will have a direct vent to pull cool air from the outside, the CPU will have a MASSIVE fan ontop of it which will also keep the ram and the other mobo componants cool and there is a 120mm fan pushing cool air from the outside into the case making sure the warm air isnt just trapped and being recycled.
Im just a little uneasy about having an i series quad AND a HD5850 in there running off the be quiet, even if it was undervolted it would still draw a fair bit o power
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Its up to PiXxX i guess but my preference would still be the i5 SG05. Although not much, gives him some room to upgrade wheras the 775 system is what it is end of story.
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
There is also the 82W TDP Core i7 860S:
http://www.lambda-tek.com/components...prodID=1904758
It is not very cheap though.

frostytech.com suggests that a Zalman 8700 will whoop the scythe's arse when it comes to low profile cooling and their website suggest support for skt 1156, although an additional adapter might be necessary.

By low-profile do you mean quiet?
If thats the case, then since this is purely a LAN machine, then quiet is not an issue at all.
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
I think that cooling is one of the most important priorities with an SFF PC IMHO!

Low profile means it is smaller than regular coolers. Agreed cooling is important which is why i have stuck a better fan in the front. Could always put something even more powerful in there, think the noctuA 140 fan on 120 mounts would fit?

I mean, by frostytech.com's charts it suggest that the zalman will keep a CPU with a TDP of 150W 11.4c cooler then the scythe albeit running slightly noisier, but come one, when your gaming noise isn't a major concern

Low profile means just that, the cooler is "low", as opposed to "high/tall" tower type coolers :)

Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
New idea
RAM - OCZ Platinum - £84
CPU - Core i7 Low Power - £274
Scan Stuff
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...01at080538.png
Total - £1224
A little over budget but not too much, should be ok.
Few questions for you guys
where can i get an adaptor for the Zalman?
Will the Noctua fit ok?
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Oooh thanks for the edit CM i definately would have missed that
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
I think that a slot loading DVD writer would be great for the system:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Search.aspx?q=slot+dvd
I would also check the Today Only and Shop Offers webpages.
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
I did initially have slot but im trying not to get too far over the budget of £1200.
Anyone any ideas on the fan fitting? Might just drop to a regular 120 to be safe
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
the opening is only 12cm isn't it?? not sure, but fitting a 14cm might increase fan noise, would probably be safer to put in a 12cm fan, and it of course should have a blue LED!
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
I would get a cheaper HD5850 1GB as £250 for an HD5850 1GB is a rip-off IMHO!! Dabs,Aria and CCL have them at a lower price usually.
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
As long as its in stock now as the one month deadline proves to be an issue with ATI cards and their insane lead times... looks like this is going to be split across quite a number of suppliers :/
Which of the above would come best recomended?
I have looked at Aria before but i dont think i have ever bought from the
I had a look at CCL now and they look to have a good range
I have a friend who used to work at Dabs and hes advised me to avoid them.
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Don't get the 140mm Noctua fan. I remember reading someone trying to install a 140mm Scythe fan, while it can mount inside the case, the size of the fan prevents you from installing the the drive cage above it.
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
You can mount the H50 vertically;
http://www.cowcotland.com/images/tes...-gamer-023.jpg
http://www.cowcotland.com/images/tes...-gamer-027.jpg
It fits, just. With a 3.5" HDD in there you can't squeeze the fan in though. Might be able to get a slimline one in? Not sure;
http://www.cowcotland.com/images/tes...-gamer-025.jpg
People over ar [H]ardforum are reporting that the 5850 will run with an i5/i7 (at stock) on the default PSU. It's a close call, but Silverstone have a 450W PSU for the SG05 coming out in April (might even be worth going for a 5770 til that comes out and then a 5870/whatever NVidia cooks up).
-
Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Sorry to barge in on your post but im doing something similar (allbeit a bit cheaper...)
Im going for tge DFI and a SG06B case, im pondering over the cooler at the moment and im wondering if anyone knows if the H50 will fit?
Given the PSU in the SB06 im thinking no, but doesnt hurt to ask!

See one post up ;) (ie. Yes, it will fit just fine :))

Re: Mini ITX build YAYYYYY
Rad on the front, replacing the fan there... I was questioning it cos above is SG05 and ive got SG06 but i guess they are same dimensions.
V intersting i was struggling on the CPU and this looks like it will fit the bill!
Awesome :)
Edit: How does the H50 perform without the fan though? I wont be using the 3.5" drive so i could maybe cut that off and fit a fan on it... Man so much to tinker with!
-
