Cheap + loud desktop computer speakers
Looking for some basic 2.0 desktop speakers - my main requirement is that they're happy to crank up the volume without distortion. They'll be used to replace the built in speakers on a television that aren't working at the moment, and need to work for a DVD played to around 20 people - in a room about double the size of a typical living room. We're not talking Transformers in full HD and subwoofer glory by the way, just easily audible voiceovers.
I know that the Creative T40s I use at home would do the trick, but I think they're overkill and thus too expensive. I've been looking at the Logitech X-140 as an option at £17, just not sure if they'll pump out the volume required.
Any recommendations under £25? If I need to go higher then so be it, but that's what I'm looking for :)
Standard 3.5mm jack by the way.
Re: Cheap + loud desktop computer speakers
I've got a set of logitech x230's (they do come with a small sub as well) which I paid about £25 for any they're fantastic, sound quality is superb and sound pretty good when turned up loud. I think saw the 2.0 bottom spec Logitech Z series speakers around that sort of price marker as well not so long ago and they're supposed to be fairly decent.

I would go for these (in fact I'm going to). Slightly above budget at £35 ( well okay significantly above)
but Behringer have a history of making value for money products.

I recommended a set of Altec Lansings to a buddy of mine (eshrules) based on the sound I was getting from an HP laptop doc/riser with built in AL speakers.
I can't remember which set he went for in the end (edit: he says VS2421, edit again: VS4221), but he wanted my babies :)

That top set looks an awful lot like mine but with a different design. Same price. Mine (which seem to have been discontinued in the last month) are great but 1 small issue: big interference from pretty much anything unfortunately including the internet. But soudn quality is great when the interference isn't going on (good solution is just to turn the bass up anyway which is awesome.)

best £36.78 I ever spent too, they're fricking awesome and had this thread popped up sooner, you could have had my set, sold on ebay for £30 :P
I would highly recommend Altecs, the sound I got from the 2.1 system I had was amazing.
I also bought a set of Logitech S220 for a PC built for my sister for Christmas, I wasn't expecting much from a sub £20 set of speakers, but she seems to like them and I couldn't detect any distortion at a higher volume either :

@nibbler, what model is your set? interference shouldn't be an issue, most speakers are shielded now so I'd suggest it's a lack of output quality or perhaps a fault on the soundcard/wiring?
Re: Cheap + loud desktop computer speakers
I've got some logitech S200s (the direct predecessor to the S220s, I'd guess ;) ) and as eshrules says, they don't distort at all at high volumes. I didn't mention them earlier due to the 2.1ness, but I'd definitely recommend Logitech every time for budget speakers. You can get a 2.0 version - the Logitech S120 - for less than a tenner, which I assume are built to the same quality. Don't know whether they'd provide the punch you're looking for though...
Re: Cheap + loud desktop computer speakers
Hmm, sounds promising. Since the X-140s are a step up from the S120s they will probably do the job nicely. I'll grab a pair of them and report back :p

Mine are the VS2421. Many people have reported this. Maybe I need a soundcard? I'm using onboard....
Re: Cheap + loud desktop computer speakers
Logitech X-220 is what i use in my office i can sum them up in one word " Brilliant "
I think if I had to get some now i would stick with Logitech
Re: Cheap + loud desktop computer speakers
Bought the X-140s, do the job perfectly and look very smart as well... for the price, a brilliant purchase as far as I'm concerned.
