How to eliminate charging circuit on laptop?

Hi there,

I wonder if anyone knows how to work out whether the charging circuit on a laptop motherboard is the cause of a battery not charging as I have read that it can be a fuse or usually (hopefully) the dc jack.

I am not aware how to test the charging circuit functions or if the fuse can be replaced? fuseable link etc...I have read that this can blow because of something on the board overheating so a new laptop is more feasisle than a new motherboard in most cases?

It is possible the battery itself is dead. Either the battery deteriorated so badly it really cannot charge or the safety mechanism was triggered at some point causing the battery to suicide (instead of catching a fire).

If you laptop is a relatively old model, RMClock (or any other laptop battery information software) will show you the battery status.

Could also try the freezer trick

its usually the dc jack, 1st place to look.

does the laptop work with the power adapter, it just doesn't charge the battery? If this is the case then it's highly unlikely to be the dc jack. It might be the PCB etch around the dc jack has come away from the laminate but you would really need to get the dc board out of the computer and have a good look at it.
