Pentium 4 CPU Advice
Need some advice please
Have a MSI Mega 865 Barebones and was wondering if a Intel Pentium 4 HT/2.80 Ghz/512 KB/800 MHz FSB would be compatible?
CPU Support List
It does state Pentium 4 Northwood 2.8G on the Support List but was not sure about the HT bit.
Would I see much difference between a Celeron 2.4GHz and the P4?
Thank you.

Re: Pentium 4 CPU Advice
it should support it. that is the north wood variant you got there. ht should just be an option in the bios or enable by default if there is not an option.

Re: Pentium 4 CPU Advice
As it's going in a SFF PC, would I be better getting the non HT version so more energy efficient?
Also, I'm assuming Northwood is better than Prescott?

Re: Pentium 4 CPU Advice
I dont think the HT will make any difference in terms of energy consumption, so better to have HT that not.
If its SFF then Northwood would be the better option, simply because the Prescott's are renowned for running very hot! Although, Prescott is a newer architecture than Northwood (2002 and 2004 respectively), I dont believe you would notice the difference performance wise, but you certainly would in heat :)

Re: Pentium 4 CPU Advice
Yeah, looks like you're good for support there, and the Northwood P4 will be *miles* better than the Celeron 2.4GHz. If you're worried though, I'd happily swap you a supported Celeron D for your P4... ;)
As far as power draw goes, there's a 1.3W TDP difference between a Northwood P4 HT 2.8GHz and a Northwood non-HT P4 2.8GHz (69.7 v 68.4), so it's really neither here not there...
