My PSU Just blew up!!

I was trying my old Eagle 320w PSU with the system in my sig, plus 3 fans DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW.

Within 3 hours it blew up. I had the side of my case open at the time, when all of a sudden I just heard something, like a strike of a match. Before I knew it, the PSU was on fire, it lasted for about 10 seconds, and the smell is still lingering.

Funny thing is, I’m still using it, I’m using it right now as I’m typing this message, and seems to be working well, but for how long, I don’t know.

it may not be a bad idea to revert to the old PSU, seen as some of the other components in your sig are not too bad - you would not want to loose them!!

I would replace that PSU asap mate! It could do it again and as matt said you wouldn't want to loose them!

I had the same with an old 300w psu that was powering some gear. Added a new hd and the psu started smelling real funny... Then system went dead - thank god it didnt fry anything! There were some burn marks on the psu to motherboard plastic thingy tho. So yeh, replace that PSU!!!!

I bet one of the big caps has blown. There are two bigs caps for smoothing the full-wave recification. As a result of losing it the voltage to your PSU will be dumpier - so devices won't be getting a constant voltage. However, they can probably just about cope with it (well, clearly they can if I it is indeed that cap that's gone.)

However, continuing to use it is madness!

On the subject of PSU's are CWT 450W good? thinking of getting one when i get a new PSU

Yup, I've stuck my 450w CWT Back in, though I cant see much difference. That Eagle PSU can take a banging.

Antec have just released a very nice new PSU, i wish i had a link but it's definitely an evolutionary step in PSU's, i do understand however that in the past CWT may have licenced designs to Antec, but cannot confirm if they designed the new PSU they're selling.

Those look OK to me - all within 10%, although the +-12V rails are a bit out of kilter - if it gets worse under load then there might be a problem.

5v is a tad low but well within the normal levels as a drop of 0.5v is deemed ok IIRC

I dunno about the 12v as it seems high but dont know what problems that could cause, none I expect

whats your 3.3v reading?
