    Portable laptop ~ max £1K

    hi all,

need some ideas for the right system to offer to a friend. Basically she wants it to be portable, i.e., ideally 12.1" even though 13" should be okay. It is mainly to basic stuff like browsing, email, office; however she is prepared to spend up to around a grand on it.

so far I have shortlisted Dell Studio XPS 13, Samsung P210

I am not keen on sony vaios, therefore will not suggest her such system

can you guys make some nice suggestions????

    cheers

I would have thought that if it was for basic stuff as you say, you'd be fine with machines costing a LOT less than a grand. Half that, I'd have thought. I'd be temped by the non-XPS range of Dell Studios.

I share the same thought, however it is "difficult" to convince her that she does not need to spend that much to have a machine which meet her needs.

In fact her current 12.1" Asus laptop is more that enough for her. Problem is that she dropped laptop on the floor and LCD has been damaged. I've told her that her current machine is more powerful than she needs.

I find the Dells quite reliable. I've got a XPS M1330 and it is great.

why not just recommend a 12" Mac? if need be she (or you) can bootcamp it and run windows.

I would have a look at the Alienware M11x:

Acer Aspire Timeline 3810 series; good build quality, brilliant battery life, and the ULV Pentium dual-cores start at less than £500, never mind a grand. Core 2 Duo CULV versions available for around the £700+ mark, there are single core variants, but why would you want them? Performance is more than fine for everyday tasks.
    Pentium-ish
    Core-wise
