Majour overheating questions?
I got a big problem,
I had my cpu and mobo for ages (check left) and as long as i can remember it had a huge overclock on it. From 2.1 to 2.7. with 1.45v going through the core. As long as i can remember the cpu used to be fine and idle at 30C ish and only reach 45 - 50C at very most.
How ever sudenly over the last week i noticed its now ideling at 55C and when its under full load it shuts down. I noticed the overclock isnt a problem since if i remove it and revert everything to stock the tempretures dont change. Its still idleing at same tempreture. I have removed the heat sink and reapplied the thermal compaund now its arctic silver stuff. Then i have checked the airflow around the case, and there seems to be plenty of air going through the heat sink. Im curently using scythe ninja2. Which i know should in theory be running this fanlessly. Any sugestions on what to try next?
Just to point out i had the cpu since about 2005 and its been overclocked for about 3 years now. Could it be the cpu going?
Re: Majour overheating questions?
Have you tried dropping it back to stock speed and voltage to see what the temps are like?
is that bios temps? or monitoring software? or temp probe?
Re: Majour overheating questions?
There are mixed reports that after 2+ years some thermal pastes can break down and need reapplying. Most of the problems seem to stem from AS5.
nm: I didn't catch the bit where you reapplied paste, doh :)

2 Words.
Electron Migration ;)
Re: Majour overheating questions?
Have you taken the fan off your ninja, got a can of compressed air, gone outside*, and blasted the heatsink from every possible angle? If you've been using the computer heavily for almost 5 years I wouldn't be at all surprised if you've just hit critical mass on a dust build-up...
*seriously, do this outside. You never believe how much dust a heatsink can accumulate until you take the fan off one yourself...
Re: Majour overheating questions?
Yeah I agree with the cleaning FAN's idea. Dust is a rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish aswell, deffo do this outside.
Make sure the thermal compound was applied correctly as applying incorrectly is as bad as having old/cracked thermal paste!
It's also worth noting where is your PC? recently I moved mine by a radiator, and I was stumped for a few hours to why my temps had raised. Forehead slapping moment insued! :)
Re: Majour overheating questions?
I'd go with a sink full of warm water, washing up liquid and a paint brush to get in between the fins.

This was the result after a washed a p4 stock cooler
Re: Majour overheating questions?
Firstly i have revered everything to stock voltages and speed to check the temps and they are exactly the same,
Regarding the fans, i take the fans off and clean them quite often anyway, and i did wash the heat sink in the sink when i took it off for thermal paste reapplying.
oh well might use this as a excuse to get a upgrade :P
