    Titan Fenrir/CM Hyper 212/Thermalright Mux-120

    Hiya,

Would like some advice as to which fan I should go for. I can find the CM/Titan for around £20 and the Thermalright for around £35, so is it worth paying extra for it? I'm planning on overclocking a Core i5-750 in a CM storm scout case so airflow is pretty good if that makes a difference. Thanks

Go for the Titan Fenri, but check you get one with the core i 5 fittings included.

    Re: Titan Fenrir/CM Hyper 212/Thermalright Mux-120

Oops got that wrong, the Titan's about £33. Although the reviews for it seem excellent. But it costs 75% more than the CM, so is it worth it?

On a related note, does anybody know how much you can overclock the 750 without upping the core voltage?

I haven't seen any direct comparison, but Titan Fenrir is one of the most effective HSFs out there, along with TRUE - I'd say go with that if budget allows. Though, MUX is the same as TRUE with LGA1156 and a fan included, so these two should be pretty even.

I've heard the name TRUE come up before but I can't seem to find that brand on ebuyer/scan/aria/overclockers?

    Re: Titan Fenrir/CM Hyper 212/Thermalright Mux-120

Well I've got my i5 750 to 3.3ghz with a CM hyper 212 plus and it's still near slient, the case fans are louder, only time I've heard the hyper 212+ fan is when I've been running burn tests to stress test it.

note: 3.3ghz is my limit atm as I'm being held back by the 1066mhz memory I've got not the cpu temps

If you want to try for around 4ghz I'd definately consider a larger cooler like the Fenrir, personally I think the MUX is a bit too pricey for what it is, it's not the same as the ThermalRight Ultra-120 Extreme, it's closer to the original ThermalRight Ultra-120

    Re: Titan Fenrir/CM Hyper 212/Thermalright Mux-120

Sorry if I'm showing my inexperience but why is your overclock being held back by your memory speed?

Also in regards to the TRUE, I can't seem to find one on scan that will fit a 1156 socket, so will I need to buy this?

    Re: Titan Fenrir/CM Hyper 212/Thermalright Mux-120

My overclock is being held back by my memory because it's pretty much the slowest ddr3 you can buy (it was also very cheap)
So as you increase the base clock speed to overclock the cpu, you also increase the memory speed.
Even with the memory divider set to it's lowest setting I'm hitting speeds on the memory that the stuff I have just cannot cope with and so it causes the system to fail when I put any serious load on it, 3.3ghz is as high as I've managed to get it while the memory is still stable.

On the bracket issue, yes you do need to get it separately, ps I'd go for this one http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Therm...k-S775-AM2-AM3
pretty black and only a couple of penies more

Save up, buy an h50. Mine is at 4GHz rock solid and damn quiet.

For a Core i5 you might try the Gelid Tranquilo, cheap and quiet. Costs £23.99 at Scan.

Ah, I hadn't thought that the memory can become a limiting factor, interesting stuff.

Hmm the gelid looks good too. I don't think I've ever spent so much time researching one component haha

Generally ram will not be a limiter, esp if you have 1600mhz ddr3, the reason is mine was the slowest around (mainly because it was £24 for 2x1gb)

I delayed building my new computer by a few months, and remember being shocked how expensive DDR2 ram had become! Pretty much forced me to invest in good spec DDR3 ram.

Btw how would I check the VRM temp on my motherboard? I tried using the everest software but can't find any mention? Is it one of the temperatures on speedfan?
