My first pc build (I7 930)

I have just joined and thought i'd share with you my first pc build.

Here is the parts list

Case: Coolermaster Storm Scout
Mobo: Asus P6T Deluxe V2
CPU: Intel Core i7 930 2.80Ghz
Ram: Patriot Viper Extreme Performance 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz
GPU: XFX ATI RADEON 5770 ALIEN VS PREDITOR 1024MB GDDR5
HDD: Samsung HD103SJ SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 3.5"
DVD DRIVE: Sony 24x Internal DVDRWRAM SATA Black Bare
PSU: COOLERMASTER SILENT PRO MODULAR 850W
OS: MICROSOFT WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL 64-BIT


I'm using my current 22" monitor, Keyboard, Mouse.

The system will be for editing HD video and Games
I will be adding more HDD in time.

I will take pics of the final build and will post them on this thread as soon as i have built it.

Let me know what you think of the list, but bear in mind everybody has only limited funds.

Looks good to me. Very similar to my 920 build. You didn't mention a cooler, so I assume you're going to leave it at stock ?

Any reason for such a beefy PSU? Could save a bit on that TBH.

Yes stock for the time being then will overclock with a better cooler

Its because i have had dealings with poor psu's in the past in a few pc's over the years
and i would like to add more HDD's & another GPU when my money allows.
The psu might be over kill but i dont whant it letting me down !

Having a reliable psu isn't about having a high power output, I would go for a slightly lower output one from a top manufacturer.

All parts have arrived at work and i will start the build tomorrow, when i am back at work.

I know higher output might not mean reliability but for future upgrades it sounded a good thing to me.

Has anyone had trouble with 5770's
Driver ?
Games ?

There's a known issue with the 57xx and 58xx series, the cards have been producing "grey screens of death or GSOD simply". As of now AMD/ATi have still not issued a proper fix for it but most people have upped the idle clocks to higher clocks.

I'm not sure if this will affect you but the problem is not one to be dismissed though.

In regards to PSU, even a Corsair HX520W can a overclocked Phenom 955 and 5770 in crossfire along with a couple of hard drives so a decent 650W will be more than enough unless you're planning for crossfire 5870s or 5970s.

Interestingly the newer the game the longer it takes to crash. BC2 is good for a couple of hours. Then BOOM.......<no carrier>....:(

Ulti - Do you know where I adjust the idle clocks ?

Yes i was planning to crossfire 2 5970's (When they are sensible money) and 3 or 4 HDD's

If anyone can find out how to up the idle clocks to higher clocks then it would help not just me but quite afew people.

Fair enough then, I just PMed Phage so I'll copy and paste what I told him.

Can't find the thread that I used so I'll try explain it myself.

Basically, firstly create a profile in CCC by selecting Options>Profile Manager and save your overclocked or default settings or whatever. However, don't active the profile yet.

Then open up the .xml file containing the details for the clock speeds. The file name of the .xml file is the name of the profile. E.g. I created a profile named Stable so for me (Windows 7) the file is here: C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles\Stable.xml

You'll want to change CoreClockTarget, MemoryClockTarget and CoreVoltageTarget. The 0 clocks are the idle clocks, 1 = 2d or low 3d I think and 2 = gaming. I currently have it set at:

I then just saved it and loaded up the profile in CCC and everytime Windows boots it loads the profile automatically. It hasn't fully gotten rid of the crashes in games though but it has gotten rid of the crashes when idle on firefox or on desktop.

Catalyst Control Centre. The Video card driver essentially. It's the little red ATi icon in the system tray.

I'm getting that grey screen of death more often now on my 5770. It's been overclocked slightly, but it seems to happen randomly and not just when a game is stressing it. Annoyingly it takes down my whole pc with it

Yup - I have to do a hard reset.
If the 10.3s don't fix this - RMA for me.
