what 775 cooler: VERY slow rpm fan/very quiet
hey all
looking for a cooler for some spare hardware to make a NAS, need a cooler thats cheap and VERY slow rpm and quiet, thermal performance doesn't matter because going to be very underclocked single core
any suggestions?
EDIT: or possible a cooler that allows me to choose my own fan?
Re: what 775 cooler: VERY slow rpm fan/very quiet
If size doesn't matter would passive be possible?
Re: what 775 cooler: VERY slow rpm fan/very quiet
noctua with the very low speed cable that comes in the pack ?
Re: what 775 cooler: VERY slow rpm fan/very quiet
Go for this really cheap CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus for only £18 and grab any cheap 120mm fan cos they're usually slow and don't move much air and therefore don't produce much noise.

Titan TTC-NK85TZ Fenrir is very quiet at low speed and it comes with a resistor cable to make it even quieter.

That will happily go passive.

I ran a Q6600 passive under a thermalright Ultra 120

cheers for all the pointers, research time!
passive would be ideal if i can get the airflow

Yeah, quite; End of thread, I would have said.
Re: what 775 cooler: VERY slow rpm fan/very quiet
Thermaltake Blu Orb II - £20ish - 17db, silent in conjunction with BIOS
Or
Scythe Infinity + AC F1 120mm fan with BIOS
Re: what 775 cooler: VERY slow rpm fan/very quiet
What cpu? I can say the the coolermaster hyper 212+ is very quite, running one on my i5 750 @3.2ghz only time I've heard the PWM fan that comes with it has been when running a cpu burn test and when the PWM setting was only 50% speed min, now on 12.5% min and that's ~600rpm and slient.
Re: what 775 cooler: VERY slow rpm fan/very quiet
well the plan is an extremely underclocked celeron D socket 775 chip (2.8Ghz ---> 1.5Ghz maybe)
as i said, it's for a freenas box using old hardware, that's why noise is more important than thermal performance because it'll be under 24/7 and i've had bad experiences with fan noise (i hate it)
Re: what 775 cooler: VERY slow rpm fan/very quiet
Scythe Mugen-2 is extremely quiet and has a big enough heatsink that the CPU doesn't heat up (I had to turn off fan failure warning on my PC as the Fan speed was too low and even an overclocked CPU runs at 35 degrees). You can try it passive and it may very well be sufficient for your usage. Only issue might be the size of the cabinet
Re: what 775 cooler: VERY slow rpm fan/very quiet
I'd say stick to the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus simply because of the price.
Re: what 775 cooler: VERY slow rpm fan/very quiet
Maybe look around for a 2nd hand Scythe Mine, there were very good coolers and the fan clamp mounting means you can fit any fan with a standard 25mm frame into it.
Why did Scythe stop makeing thoes? they were such a good cooler. :(
