First of all, could you tell us what RAM and CPU you have?
Asus Striker is a Nvidia chipset AFAIK which allows RAM speed and bus speed to be unlinked whereas the Intel chipsets such as P45 does not allow this. However, this shouldn't be a problem. If you're using a 200FSB CPU (E.g. the E5X00 Pentium series) then you'd want a 1:2 ratio to run the RAM at 800Mhz, if you're running a 266FSB CPU (The ones with 1066 Bus speed such as E/Q6600 and E7X00 series) then you'd want to put the FSB:DRAM ratio at 2:3 (usually stated as 1:1.5), if you're running a 400FSB CPU (such as the E8X00 series) then you'll want 1:1 ratio to run at 800Mhz.
Make sure the BIOS version fully supports the board you have. The P45 chipsets should be able to overclock well, even with a cheapo P35 chipset that I tested it overclocked well. I've tried MSI, Gigabyte, Abit and DFI P35/P45 boards and I haven't seen a single one fail at least a 30% overclock. Bumping the voltage generally allows for up to around a 50% overclock too (depending on the processor).
Make sure you're not upping the FSB too much, try upping it by 5 FSB or something.
Also to make sure nothing is wrong, try to run some stress testing whilst the system is on stock settings.

The E8xxx have a 333FSB - Only the QX9770/50 had a 400FSB.

And for overclocking, you generally want to start at 1:1 cpu/ram ratio, then increase your fsb to find the overclock you're happy with (with testing of course) then tweek your ratio to get the memory to the speed you want or as close to as you can.
The major factor here is that running your memory faster than 1:1 on socket 775 really has little effect in the end performance, so if you want you can happly keep it at 1:1 even if the memory is running below it's stock speed.

i mean asus striker ii extreme, when i wrote asus striker...
anyway i am using a q9550 and 1600mhz corsair dominator, but it seems the msi mobo refuses to post whenever any changes made to the bus speed or the ram speed. i current v1.5 of the bios if that helps.

i tried using the on-board oc juimpers as well, but that didnt help neither

a little update:
i managed a pretty unstable oc by using the on-board jumpers to oc the bus speed to 400 with lower ram speed (800mhz), but it still couldnt let me change any settings in the bios other than underclocking...how can anyone get around that?!
