pop.... sinking feeling

I was under my PC desk 20 minutes ago.. fixing a mates PC..

Sair walked in.. said she was gonna play CoD W@W on her PC (upgraded yesterday to a dual core) and when she hit the power button.. I heard a "pop"

She went quiet...

I am now waiting for her to move off her other PC so I can get to that one and see what went pop...

don't you hate that?

So... to keep my heart light.. and not get depressed...

who wants to guess what's gone ?

Just to balance the books, I'll go for PSU, causing complete failure of mobo, CPU, and RAM. Hard drives survive.

definately PSU.. the old PSU tester didn't light up for even a fraction of a second.. but now no way to tell... it's a Shuttle so now I need either a new shuttle PSU or a new PC

or do what I did and put a ATX power supply on top of my old shuttle and run the cables inside the opening created by the removed PSU

Depends on the quality and design of the PSU, and the failure mode. If something internal has shorted, dragging the power rails down, then you may be OK. If something failed and the output over-volted AND it has over-voltage protection, you should be OK. Otherwise

Certainly an option for determining if there has been any other damage. As for the shuttle PSU... personally, I'd open it up (usual caveats - make sure all high energy components are dischaged, only if you know what you are doing and are comfortable working on equipment that can kill you if you don't know what you are doing and see if there is anything visible - popped capacitor would be a possible culprit.

Then (if you are sufficiently skilled and you can find something obvious) you could replace that component. Then test the PSU carefully to make sure nothing else has gone, and job done. But there are a number of ifs and buts there.

CAT.. it's an ST20G5.. it's an ATI mobo model.. a rarity.. but the PSU is a fairly normal Shuttle affair.

google it and you'll see a load.. they;re about £30- £35 on ebay which is way more than I'd pay to be honest, as ther Franken PSU is something I've done to test the rest of the rig and it's fine.

no bad smell.... can't see any fuses on this one.. and no leaks caps or blackened components
(kettle lead is fine, used on other PSU to test rig)

Here is a picture of the ST20G5 motherboard:

It uses standard 20 + 4 pin ATX power connectors. The motherboard in my SN41G2 V2 has the same power connections and it should fit a standard 1U PSU. I tried the 24 pin ATX power cable on a 1U PSU I have and the first 20 pins seem to fit fine in the motherboard.

If you have a normal ATX PSU then you should be able to use one of these to the test the motherboard.

That is a 1U PSU.

There a few FSP and Seasonic units which should do the job.

Like I said before a normal PSU with 20 pin and 4 pin ATX power connectors should do the job if you want to test the motherboard.

yes.. works straight away with new PSU dangled off back.. and broken PSU not lighting up my tester like others do... it's babooooo
